Are Richmond gears normally loud?

I swapped my 3.23s out of my 742 case and replaced with Richmond 3.91s and installed a dr. Diff carrier, the coast side is quite as can be, the drive side howls a little bit and whines at 40mph, I touched the diff housing after a 25min drive and it's hot! I put about 70 miles on it all under 35mph, I'm thinking I should pull the the carrier again and figure out whats going on, any advice?
 
Loud on acceleration and quiet on coast usually signals the pinion isn't deep enough into the case. What's the backlash and are you using a pinion depth tool or going on pattern only?
 
Going on pattern only, truthfully this is my 1st differential I set up (apparently wrong) I took my old pinion bearing and lathed the I.D. out enough so I can slip it over the pinion with shims and do a dummy install, honestly didn't know there was a tool

There are several ways to do it including using a depth mic but unless you are familiar with machinist's measuring, I wouldn't recommend using them......and there's lots of youtube vids on it these days. A computer was several years away when I bought it lol. Btw, honing out the bearing is a very good idea. I have several for the different style rears and Dana 60 and now a days, they sell them.
 
AR67GTX is having the exact opposite problem with his set up...you might also find some useful info on his thread....

I did mine the same as you with Cranky's guidance :thumbsup:. Also Richmond gears with zero noise, don't buy the whole "Richmond Gears being noisy" theory myself having installed a few of them. They can be a real pain, good luck.

There are a few errors in it. I had to closely read the descriptions and remedies on the gear tooth pattern examples. Some of the tooth pattern sketches don't match the narrative under them.

.008 BL isn't too much but check it in at least 3 places. I check it in 4. I also like to place the carrier in the case without the ring gear attached, snug up the bearings and check run out of the face where the ring bolts on.

Didn't read into it very far when I found the first error but I was only scanning it but the error is mounting distance. MD is NOT the same as pinion depth. Most factory gears for the 8 3/4 are not marked for pinion depth so you have to use the mounting distance measurement and over the last 30 years I've come across a couple of aftermarket sets that were not marked too. Anyways, the MD figure comes from the distance from the FRONT side of the pinion gear where the bearing faces up to the gear head and not the back face. In order to set up a set of gears when they are not marked, you have to know what the factory uses for their mounting distances and each of the 41, 42 and the 89 cases are different. Once you know what the MD's are, you can subtract the pinion head thickness from the total MD and then use that figure to measure from the back side (the face that is towards the back of the car) and that is your pinion dept. If you could get a measuring tool on the front face, then you could use the MD measurement to set it up but that's pretty much impossible once a bearing is on the pinion.

Here's a question, I have about 70 miles on the new gears and carrier, at 35mph she whines and it seems like I have a slight howl as well, the whine is loud tho, since I already have that many miles on the ring and pinion and assuming it's created a pattern is it to late to move the pinion in or out/ up and down? Do I just have to live with it now? I'm also concerned about how hot the case got :-/
 
I dont sorry, it was hot enough where I couldn't hold my hand on it, I can check though when I get home later on, would it possibly cause more harm if I made a readjustment after have so many miles on it??

About 120 and above is going to feel pretty hot to the touch and rear ends usually operate at higher temps than that but I wouldn't put more miles on it if you are planning on moving the pinion. Chances are it's already developed a pattern but I've seen stranger things happen.
 
Do you advice I run it and live with the whine since it's developed a pattern?
