just playing with my 440source 512 kit , trying to measure how far down the pistons are in the hole, but never having put one of these together, do I have the piston in the right way, rod bearing tabs and writing on outside of rod are towards pan rail, I think I have the piston right, better to klook stupid and ask the question that be be stupid and have it in worng... if it matters I am using stealth head as well.. how much clearance are you guys running between the rod cap and oil pump boss on the inside of the block.. piston.JPGpiston2.JPG

also when getting the block decked to zero deck that would be the highest part of the piston right?which in the picture is at the top side, otherwise that upper part would protrude above the deck..into the headgasket. am I correct?

You have the pistons in the right way, but I don't know how you have the pistons on the rods. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but maybe someone else knows by your description on how the rods are installed.

They look correct to me and your right its to the highest (top) part of the piston

Yes the pistons are right. Now write on top of each piston with a magic marker and number each piston to its respective bore. Then the rod will go on the piston with the rod cyl number towards the pan rail. So when the crank throw is closest to the oil pan, then you should be able to see the rod numbers for each pair of rods. Like 1 and 2 will be on the first throw. 3 and 4 on the second one back etc. I have seen more than 1 engine with the pistons in backwards! There are some other threads on here that explain this clearly.

You bought the stroker kit? Do you have the 1/2" oil boss? If so you will have to take some metal off for clearance. I had to here is a pic, take your time and fit it, usually about 20 thousandths is enough but up to you. Good luck with your build hope you turn 600+ hp! ;)

STOP!!! Your pistons are not installed correctly.

They are half way correct but what I see in the lower pic is the valve relief placement doesn't match the head. These pistons have different sized cutouts dictating their location. You need to have the following order: E, I, I, E, E, I, I, E.

piston was only put on rod so I could measure deck height , I used the same piston for all 4 corners, machine shop has the rest of them with the rest of the rods, just brought block home to do some clearanceing and deburring.so they fit one piston to a rod and told me to install it in all 4 corners and do some measurement to check for deck height and to see if block deck was square in all conrers, I dunno , first time doing things this way ..thanks for pointing that out meep,. that's why I am posting my progress to get good feedback from people like you! :) thanks again

LMAO every one panic there's a lobster loose oh holy cow he's loose!

I do it like that too but I also have a bar that I can check main bore for straight and use a depth mic to measure to the bar to check the block for square.

OK, good. Just wanted to stop you before things got too far along. But sounds like you are on it.

Double and triple check and the only dumb question is one you did not ask

should the highest part ( intake valley side of this piston be at zero deck? 440 source recommended that , but my machinest suggested that we could move it up into the gasket a bit, what have you guys done?right now before decking it sits approx. .020 in the hole

Zero deck will be fine as you don't want to build in too much compression. Shoot for 9.5:1 max with a streetable cam. I'd CC the piston at TDC with a compressed gasket in place then do the head so you know exactly what you have.

Yep what meep said, mine are are at 0 and have 9.6:1 I had my Diamond pistons dished -24cc similar to yours. it wall works great.
