Hi, can some one tell me how the ash tray door fits into the dash? That actual tray screws in no probs, the door just doesn't seem to slot in and hold in place?

Looking at the 'slides', there seem to be to 'female' guides. Is there a piece in between the two slides on the door and ash trays?

In case any one thinks I'm lazy, I have checked the FSM and couldn't find anything on the ash tray. Just doesn't seam to go down to that level of detail...

I believe there should be a ball bearing slide in there, a couple of balls in a cage track. What year?

I can't see in the pic with the padded door over the front but it sounds like you may be missing the small slide bracket the holds the bearings in place. That ash tray is a 3 piece assembly for a 68

I was actually thinking it might be a shaft or some ball bearings, didn't think if a bearing pack though. Does any one sell them? Other wise I might try getting some loose bearings to jam in there.

Sorry I should of said, it is a 68 Coronet.

So the three pieces should be, the cover, the ash tray its self and the bearing cage? Or am I missing something else?

The front cover with the pad is one piece, the large dash bracket which has the removable ash tray insert is another piece and then there is a small sliding bracket with a spring steel lock tab on it which also serves to hold the 4 individual ball bearings.

Awesome, another obscure part that I don't have! Anyone seen it on a website in their travels?

Had a look last night to see if I could just use loose ball bearings, no go, they'll drop out easily. So I need this cage set up to make it work it seams.

Magic! Now I know what I'm looking for / need to build! If I could thank you more then once I would!

Actually could you do me one more favor? Whats the size of those ball bearings?

Malicious, The ball bearings appear to be slightly larger than 1/4" but they will not do you any good without the slider piece. The slider is what holds them in place. You only have two of the three pieces needed. I see there is one on ebay like yours missing the slider and bearings. Here is another one that appears to be complete with the slider and bearings. Spendy but............. http://www.ebay.com/itm/381003719500?

Sorry didn't see the reply come in. Thought I might have a crack at fabbing something up. Seams like a pretty simple piece, hardest part is probably punching out the ball bearing 'cups'. I'll post up some results if I can get it to work.

At this stage of the build, $125 + shipping and conversion to Australian dollars is too much for a small cosmetic piece like the ash tray. Id rather spend the scratch on parts to get the car on road. So if I can I'll make what I have work, replace it down the track if I need to.

I think another option would be to try and find the flip out ash tray. They were also used on these cars and were more common. I don't know what the reason behind the different styles but I would think the flip out one would be much cheaper than the slider style. Myself, (since there is no smoking in my car) I would find a way to attach the door so it would stay in place since it won't be used anyway.
I will be looking at a few 68 & 69 b bodies in a junk yard soon. Maybe I could find you a flip out tray if you are interested.

Will some close ups from a '71 Charger flip-out style help out here? I restored an entire assembly over the summer and have a bunch of pictures of it both before and after my work. I don't remember any ball bearings though.

If you need something more specific just let me know -- I tend to take a LOT of pictures. :D

This thread is dealing with a 68 B Body. Maybe 69 also but I know the 71 up have a narrower ash tray assembly. I believe the slider ash tray was not available in 69 but possibly the flip out unit may fit the dash. Not completely sure on this

Sorry, I wasn't trying to confuse the issue or make things worse -- I'm an A Body chick and will never pretend to know these beautiful babies like you guys do. I knew it wasn't identical but it did seem similar to me so I tossed those pics up. I'm happy to delete them though if they're inappropriate at all.

Well after a disappointing run on the rear end- I should say one hiccup I suppose. I thought I'd whip up the slide for the ashtray.

This is the first proto. Doesn't look pretty but works well. A little fine tuning and I reckon we're away.

Looks like you are in business. If you're not a smoker, it don't need to function but it looks like yours will
