AWB Wagon Build

keep the pics comin!!! and i can't wait to see the first pic of your wagon with air under the front tires!!!![/QUOTE]

You and me both brother, you'll be the first to know when it happens. Even with the somewhat tame initial power plant we should be pulling some descent wheel stands I figure. Everything else is built to withstand much more power.

You might want to keep some groceries in the front seat! Wow what an over-hang! Looking Good!

Fender modification is half done and looks great, if you ask me. You can see more pics and read more about it on the build blog shown below.

takin' a chance.

1) Does your 65 Coronet Wagon have the 3rd seat?

2) Would you sell the 3rd seat?

None of our '65s had the third row seat but I have a set from a '64 440 wagon that I parted out. You can do the research and tell me if they are the same. I would take $100.00 for it and could probably get it to my friends place near Seattle in the Spring, otherwise shipping would be a bitch.
pm me if you're interested and I can rustle up some photos.

Alrighty Pat; what did you do up front? details man? what axle? how far a move? what steering box?

I'm still trying to sort out what to do up front with our 65.....

That's actually next on the "to do " list. We are using an unshortened A-100 axle and leaf spring combo moved forward 8". We haven't decided how may leaf springs will be in our pack. The centerline for the leaf spring locating pin will sit slightly outboard on the frame rails so I'm planning on welding some interesting box tube mounts. I won't get to it until after Christmas but I will post pics and descriptions once it's done. We will be using a V8 Valiant steering box on a custom mount with cross steer. We are also planning on ditching the K-member all together since we're using a motor plate.
It's all a learning curve but history is a pretty good teacher.
Let's see some of your project.

Hey Pat-

The build is shaping up really nice!!! You guys are working hard on it too. That was a great score on the Dodge van as well. Are you going to try to make the stock steering box work? Its going to be tough with it set up for near steer. I know some have tried to use the steering box off the vans, but to me its even more tough!! Saginaw 525 set up for cross steer?? God, seeing this build wants to make me jump back into the Polara, and finish it up!!!!
I'm not sure if these pictures of my build will help you at all, but feel free to puruse them. The car is yet to be done. I had to finish another altered for SEMa last year, but it was not a Chrysler.

Hey Dale, thanks for the kind words. I was actually trying to get ahold of you a while back for some reason or other but couldn't find any contact info. More than anything, I want to stay in touch with the people in our hobby that are stoked on period correct altereds, so when the time comes I can call you out for a match race. I've already been hassling the hell out of Steve with odd-ball questions, he's being a good sport about it of course.

In regards to the steering system, I'm planning on using a V8 manual box out of a '65 Valiant. We are doing cross steer and will be hatching some plans to make this work. One idea involves a Jeep tie rod but we need to see it with all the pieces together to decide if it will work.

I really want to see this car at the track this Summer so the only solution is to log ridiculous hours. I'm already looking forward to building my next car. After the wagon it'll be a cake walk. mmmm cake.

Very cool! Had dinner New Years night with Steve, out here in Southern California. I drove my altered Comet on the freeway, while they chased me in a rental Challenger!!! Oh, what fun..... The AWB candle will always be lit at my shack!!!

Alright, here's a Cole's notes version of what we've been up to. The blog has a more detailed account if you're into that.

I got probably 95% of the body stitched, ground and flap wheeled. I'm amazed at the amount of lead from the factory in the rear corners. Over 1/4" in spots. Still lots of welding to go on the interior and underside though. We then got our rear leaf spring relocation done to accept those 10" slicks.

Front spring mounts competed and axle hung in place to get the feel for the new spindle height. We also added a new forward cross member and notched our front bumper to clearance the new mounts.

And finally stripped everything off and got the body on the rotisserie. This officially signifies stage 2 of the operation.
