Another tunnel that most people don’t know about is the Berlin Tunnel. When I was stationed in Berlin back in the late 70s I was assigned to an Infantry Recon Platoon. We would drive by the warehouse where the project started. We heard all kinds of rumors as to the tunnels status. The warehouse appeared abandoned at the time but it was surrounded by a locked fence.
During one of the patrols I led we decided to stop and check it out. No sooner than we got back to our headquarters we were met by our battalion intel officer. Apparently the East German border guards reported our visit to the warehouse and notified the Soviets. I guess they were pissed. I kinda got an arse chewing but oh well, wasn’t the first and certainly not the last.
