start with a PARMA edge chassis if you're just getting in, do some internet research on soldering chassis together, and find a 1/24 scale model car kit you like... search around for slot car shops. some might be old school, some might be 1/32 scale magnet cars difficult to say.
Steve has it exactly right. You really have to build it yourself. Parma sells (or used too) sell ready to run drag cars. They had a super 16D motor, Edge chassis, and Lexan body. To be competitive and run consistent you have to spend some time setting up your car. It’s just like the real thing. Getting the car to hook up and launch right is a big part of it. These motors turn around 10,000 rpm. Tires, gears, wheelie bars, and every other part of the car must be tuned to work as a team. As you dial the car in you’ll start to notice certain parts need improvement or replacement. Then the tuning starts all over again. The motors are rebuilt and blue printed just like the real ones. The commutators are cut, armatures balanced, brush timing set, magnets zapped, and all bearing and clearances checked and set. These cars are or were only around $100.00 worth of parts but you’ll spend hours working on your car(s). This is the closest thing to real drag racing and it is very addictive especially when you start winning races. Once you start winning some money you’ll be hooked big time. The most I ever won was $75 and I didn’t even come in 1st. There was close to a hundred cars there that day.
I just looked at Parma’s web site and they still sell the car I started with (1/24 scale Dodge Coronet RTR). They now sell a whole outfit with car, controller, lube, box, etc. for $110.00
haha! I'll try to get a picture or two tonight...I totally forgot...the year end push at work is here.
adding to above, some places are starting a street racing class.... no glue, no lane prep, no wheelies, or wheelies under the body work...they're slower, and you have to drive it...
