B&M cable keeps melting! How do you route yours???

Hi! My car is a 71 Charger with a 440 and Hooker Super Comp Hedders. Previous owner swapped out the floor shift for a B&M starshifter. When I bought the car, the shifter cable in it was melted. So I put a new one in it, being very careful to not have it touching any of the header pipes. But it still melted after only like 10 minutes of idling in my driveway! argh!!! What have you guys done to protect your shifter cables, if you run them? Use a really long cable? Wrap of some kind? If you could, post up a picture of your current set up, so we can see how to properly do it!! Thanks!!!! So frustrated......
 
I have had to wrap mine after the fourth time it melted. What a pain as no one makes a good heavy duty one. I wrap mine in a layer of foam, then a layer of that Dyna-mat space age stuff, followed by a sleeve made of stainless steel weave (the stuff they make to cover hoses for show). That has been in there for years now with no melt downs.
 
I wrapped mine with small heater hose on a 65 Plymouth worked for years
 
I had the same issue with my 72 RR 340 and I want with a longer cable and I went with an nontraditional routing. That was about 10+ years ago but I still remember constant problem with burning that cable until I went to the longer one.

They sell heat sleeves at auto zone to slip over the cable. That's how I did mine.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking of using the heavier duty cable with a .375" OD. Then covering it with a sleeve. The DEI stuff has the highest rating. They have a sleeve with a .375" OD and one with a .5" OD. Do you think it would be better to have a snug fitting fire sleeve, or a looser one with a bit of an air gap between the cable and the sleeve? Thanks!
 
Did you mean the sleeve had a I.D of .375" or .5". I always go with the looser fit. It will conform to bends with more ease.
 
I wrapped the collecter portion of my header with header wrap along with the shifter cable being wrapped with some kind of heat resistant tape wrap.
