Back to Stock?

I've pretty much maintained my GTX towards the stock side. I do have an 800 Edelbrock carb on it to replace the 650 AVS that was on it when I bought it and added linkage to work the choke as a divorced system. I also installed a 2-1/2 inch TTI system with their supplied Dynomax turbo mufflers. If anything it's too quiet to me, but probably is a good overall compromise. I also re-worked my Mopar distributor to build in a custom advance curve to allow a bit more initial timing. I figure that helps the stock engine breath and exhaust as freely as possible while maintaining the good engine manners of a stock engine. Lately I have ventured a bit from stock with a 3.55 rear and a bit looser torque converter since I don't spend much time on highways.

My one time experiment many, many years ago with a hotter cam in a stock 383 hi-po ended unsatisfactorily for me. It hurt low end performance and the small valve heads couldn't take advantage of the additional duration and lift. My car is full power with AC, heavy and no racer, so it needs to stay with a stock cam and intake. But, it still moves out pretty strong for what it is, in it's present configuration and idles quietly and smoothly.
Many similarities to my car. Previous owner(s) added A/C for cruising but then dumped in too much cam and carburetion. I also modified the advance curve and carb jetting which helped but it is still too rough for my liking. I think one of the problems is that it still has factory iron exhaust manifolds and stock pipes which I want to keep. Mine is a 4-speed so I have the 3.54 Dana. One of the reasons I always loved these cars is a ride I took in one in about 1969 - it was a stock 4-speed and it was the first time I ever traveled over 100 mph!

List
Valve covers and correct heater hose bracket.
Water pump
Carter tag number
Dana tag number s
Starter rekay
Date code alternator starter
Inland shifter mechanism
That is serious restoration stuff, very cool. For now I'm just looking to make it run more like original.

You all are a bad Influence on me! All this talk with so many GTX's gets me feeling guilty!I have a second GTX that I bought in 1996, waiting for me to get around to putting it together. It is TT1 Copper with Pewter Interior. Last on the street in 1981.
In the 90's a friend of mine and I bought and sold this car twice to each other, But the last time around I kept it! No rust ever,no dents. just disassembled. Gonna have to get on it I think. Thanks a lot!

Bad Influence? Thanks for the compliment, we are happy to do our part in getting another GTX back on the street...

yes it has been dumb of me to just look at it. I'm not getting any younger. In 1968 when I turned 16 my neighbor let me borrow his silver 67' GTX to take the buddies to a teen club. I was the only one with a license. It had 5k on it, so I remember how they drove new. On the was a guy in a 396 chevelle was following me, and tried to pull up next to me. I was scared, thinking it was some jerk. so I stepped on it. Finally he got next to me and asked what was in that car as he never gets beat. I told him I wasn't racing, just trying to get away from him! Boy he got pissed! I'll never forget a fresh 440 with 102 octane and leaded fuel. That car was nicest car I ever drove back then.
My neighbor died 10 years ago, but I think of him every time I get in that car today.

Here's a 67 GTX story but it may make the purists cringe... I bought my first 67 around 1971, it was a pretty basic dark green 440 automatic with beat up white interior, drum brakes and one legged rear end. Later I got a good deal ($900) on a silver semi loaded 4 speed car with a real nice black interior but high mileage and a rusty body. I swapped the Dana rear, 4 piston Power discs, front and rear bumpers with rub strips, and full black interior with buddy seat into my car and sold the silver car with all the crappy parts. So if anyone ever found a silver 4 speed car with a one legged 8 3/4 rear....

oh well, they were 4 years old then, and nobody much cared. At least you still have one. many were wrecked or totaled. In 1968 there was a dark blue 67' owned by a young guy that raced all the time. I went in the Military, and came back in 1974. I saw a pristine 67' Dark blue GTX advertised in the paper, so I knew it was him. so I went to the door, and his mother answered. The guy was in a wheel chair, and Mom said he is still in 1968, and will never Improve. Apparently he gotten in a bad accident with the car. They fixed the car, but not him. I didn't have the cash at the time, but it looked like showroom new again. I asked him what happened, and he said: last night I wrecked my car! But it is ok now.and fell asleep.
I felt bad for him,,,,

Tex you have a beautiful car. When I first put my 67 R/t together, I put a big crane cam in it, torker intake with 850 Holley, unilite distributor. The car sounded really nasty but was not street friendly. Then I went a different route. Installed comp xe 268 cam, edelbrock ChB intake,750 Holley crab and pertronix 3 installed in the stock distributor.Very happy with the way car runs now.I pump the gas twice fires right up and drives perfect. Painted everything factory color can't tell from stock.

Thanks for the response. I figured others would have had the same issues I have now. What is a good source for a cam matching the original 440 magnum factory specs?

For the price, go with Summit 6401(?) like ‘lewtot’ previously posted.

Well, it looks like I will not be doing any more work on this car after all. It has been for sale since last August and finally sold. The new owner picked it up today and headed back to Nebraska. Thanks again to Hemmings Motor News and their online site and thanks to all the experts on this forum for assisting me during my ownership. I intend to remain onboard here, if I buy another car it may be a B body!

Did you get near asking price?

May I ask where it went in Nebraska? I always like seeing another GTX up this way.
