The '73 should have a ground wire from the back of the intake or head to the firewall. Sometimes the firewall itself, sometimes to the same bolt that holds the module to the firewall. I'd look at/for that, and as was mentioned closely inspect the wiring and connections a the firewall and back of the engine.
