What’s the best way to hold the crank still and torque the hb bolt????

I used a screwdriver through flex plate, did the trick.

Make tool like this that bolts to harmonic damper, just add a long handle. They sell these, you need to look around.

I'm one that uses an impact but will also use a dab of red Loc-tite. Been doing it like that for a lot of years with no problems. Most decent guns will do 150 easily enough but most of the big blocks are around 135 ft lbs but a few different engines take 200.....inch lbs.

Yep, blip, blip with the impact. It's a big bolt with fine threads that screws in what, almost an inch? It will take a lot of torque. And I use a balancer installer tool and not the bolt.

Made a tool out of a piece of angle iron that locks the ring gear. It bolts to one of the cover bolt holes automatics have. Something similar to hold converter in place when pulling trans. Instead of a bolt I am switching over to high quality stud and nut for the balancer. B&J tech tip. I have had one big block this way for quite a while,no problems. Now I will do the others as the opportunity arises.

Remove one of the plugs, with that piston at the bottom. Insert a bunch of 1/4" rope. Rotate until rope gets squished and torque your bolt.
Works like a champ.
Just remember to leave some rope hanging out of the plug hole...

I used a triangle shaped wedge of 2x4 I cut and wedged into the bell housing of my 4 speed ring gear/bell housing.
