Base Coat Clear Coat Paint in the engine bay

Getting my Satellite/RR clone painted. The other day the painter asked me if I wanted the engine bay clear coated. I said "I don't friggin know". I'll get back with you. So my question is yes or no. Any painters out there that can tell me? It's his first time painting an engine bay. Of course thanks for any help.
 
Single stage seems to be the norm but it might not be a perfect match. I would clear coat it. It will match color and gloss wise.
 
use the same paint on the entire car........ you will probably spend more money and things wont match if you dont
 
In my experience underneath by the muffler area it burned off the clear coat a bit. I don't think the clear holds up to heat very well at least it didn't in my case, had no issues in engine compartment before. only a few cars though.
 
Mine was done in base/clear as was the rest of the car. But my intent had been to have the engine bay done in "satin" as opposed to gloss. However, that would have involved either a different mix of paint or a different clear coat. At $500/gallon for clearcoat I passed on that idea.
 
they make a matting agent, not sure if its compatible with clear or not, used it on some dash paint mixtures. that knocks down the shine

What are you talking about? It hasn't been painted yet. We just discussing what to do when he got to that point.

Shine is not a problem to me. I was worried about the heat coming from the headers. Thanks.

I wanted single stage but the painter said he had never done a single stage paint paint job before and talked me into clear coat/base coat. I also am worried about it matching the rest of the car in shine, but am also worried about header heat.

Not painting underneath. The whole car had been undercoated from the factory
(I think) and is in exceptional shape. So no worries there.
 
A quality high solids clear will hold up to heat the the same way a single stage urethane paint will. If your painter is using a good 2 part urethane clear you should not have any issue. As mentioned paint the engine compartment with the same paint as the exterior.
