Hi All,

I was thinking about relocating my battery to the trunk so that I could mount an MSD Ignition Box to the battery tray.

I was going to order a Summit Racing Trunk Battery Relocation Kit but I read that the box needs to be vented.

Is that the case with all batteries? I planned on ordering an Optima battery for the job too.

How is the venting accomplished?

thanks,

The factory cars had vented caps with a hose on each cap going to the outside through the trunk floor. Since the vent source was easy to deal with on those, the battery just sat on a tray in the open. With the newer sealed batteries it may be necessary to put it in a sealed box and run a piece of tygon hose from the box through one of the holes in the trunk floor.

Been running batteries in the trunk for years! My race cars and particularly in my street cars ( I hate a battery in the engine compt...it clutters it up). No need to run a vent whatsoever withe the sealed batteries!

So which one of the above?

Also, does the positive cable run along the undercarriage of the car or under the carpet?

I have a few finishing touches to do on mine, but here is what I did with some advice from members here.
I used 1/0 welding cable from the starter to the soleniod in the truck and ran it through the frame rails, and the same size cable from the battery to the solenoid. Also used the welding cable for the ground in the trunk as well as the ground for the motor to the frame. Then I used 4 ga wire from the alt to the battery in the trunk. I used a Ford noid so that the cable to the starter only has power on start up. The trunk relocate makes it much better for hooking up the stereo LOL.

Cheap and easy - albeit not the best looking container around. Box seals the battery and one line through the floor to vent.

I too want to relocate to the trunk, I was going to run 0/1 high power stereo cable, I have it in my Honda Civic running a 3500 watt system, so figured it would be good enough for the charging system. I guess the down side is it cost about $4 to $5 a foot.
I am not sure if it would have to be vented, the factory lightweght cars were in the trunk and no venting there.. Also seen several 62 Darts relocated and no box, vent or anything, just a battery in the trunk. I am doing mine over the right wheel for racing purposes; to put more weight over the axle.

battery needs to be in a sealed box if your trunk area isnt sealed off with aluminum behind the back seat. if your sealed off, then no box is required.
