Yeah, the wood dams and cut outs were done by the factory as well as modifying the air and high speed bleeds in the carbs. However the fuel changed a lot since then so it may be necessary to a point to start over. Port FI would cure everything in a hurry!

I agree, I wouldn't be drilling up the long rams either. The reason why they are that configuration is because of fuel distribution. New cars essentially have the exact same long ram intake but it's all curled up like a tail on a Pug. The reason the new cars get away with it is because of what you said. The fuel is injected at the port so it doesn't have to make the convoluted route to get to the cylinder. It's a lot easier to move air only and not deal with fuel separation as it tries to make those turns.
 
yeah, I bought a sonic pair a couple of years ago to put on my 66 Chev with a 440. they would stick out each side of the motor box which I thought would be pretty cool. On the van the top is dropped 6" with a full cage so it would "fit" the ambiance as it's different ;D
The manifolds needed repair on the bottom of the carb bases where the heat riser boxes ate the aluminum up pretty good. They came out nice but you can still see the repairs.
One thing is they will fit all BB since your not limited by manifold width just the engine compartment dimensions. Weren't the shorter ones (which are very rare) used for a higher rpm range?

Might want to look at the Professional products Pro-Jection III throttle body EFI?
It looks really easy to install, and is not too much $$$, but might want to make sure to isolate it from manifold heat as the computer is contained on the throttle body.
