Yeah, the wood dams and cut outs were done by the factory as well as modifying the air and high speed bleeds in the carbs. However the fuel changed a lot since then so it may be necessary to a point to start over. Port FI would cure everything in a hurry!
I agree, I wouldn't be drilling up the long rams either. The reason why they are that configuration is because of fuel distribution. New cars essentially have the exact same long ram intake but it's all curled up like a tail on a Pug. The reason the new cars get away with it is because of what you said. The fuel is injected at the port so it doesn't have to make the convoluted route to get to the cylinder. It's a lot easier to move air only and not deal with fuel separation as it tries to make those turns.
