I am in the process of replacing all the parts of the horn button internals in the steering wheel column on my 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. So far I have replaced everything but the brass contact ring that is on the steering wheel itself. I cannot figure out how to get the spring shaped lock ring that holds the brass contact ring on the steering wheel off. Also, the brass contact ring on the steering wheel is very tight. Should this ring be moveable or tight against the steering wheel. That ring is loose on the steering wheel I replaced. I have included pictures of the brass ring I want to replace and the new replacement part. How do I get the spring off the steering wheel so I can replace the brass contact ring? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Just tap it in the direction that "opens" the coil and lift at the same time.

Note EXACTLY where it currently is, as that's your signal light switch cancel tab.

....BTW .... the steering wheel doesn't care what sort of horn you have. It simply provides a path to ground for the circuit.

Dumb question, but how do you tap the spring retainer and lift up on it at the same time. I tried, but it did not work. How much force is required to accomplish this feat. I don't want to destroy any of the new parts I have put on trying to make the horn work properly. This is the last part before I can put the steering wheel back on. All the other parts such as the turn signal assembly and horn contact parts have been replaced.
