just bought another Champion rad today for the Belvy II....heres why :

some YO-YO jammed a 26" rad into a 22" opening.....not only THAT...but the goof eliminated the petcock....so i had to dikk with the lower rad hose to drain it..( did that 4 times and that was REASON ENUFF to get another rad ).

it will be cooling a hypo 440 ...but i dont think ill have any problems with the 22 incher. the ends of the 26 incher was covered by the rad support anyway, and champion guarantees to cool 600 H.P....i "think" im pushing 425-450 horses with that 440 so it should be good and can mount to the original captive nuts and all will be puuuuuuurdy again.

i have a 26 inch rad here....no leaks but evidence that it has been repaired....with an external tranny cooler still bolted to it if anybody needs one...for.....WHATEVER. the number on the tank is #2582962. i have no idea what year this is or what it came off of and the petcock has been removed and patched.....why?...I HAVE NO IDEA ! since Dr. Frankenstein stuck it on there.50 BUXX PLUS SHIPPING AND ITS YOURS...I HAVE NO USE FOR IT!

its a mopar rad....great shape, clean #2582962. no petcock!

***UPDATE***...this mopar rad is from a 1969 Chrysler Imperial 440 c.i.

Are you using a shroud for your new 22" rad? I have a '64 with a 26"er in it and want to go to a 22" also. Thanks.

the rad is on order so i dont have it yet. i was not planning on using a shroud. once i get it installed ill let you guys know the details. the 26 incher cooled great. the 440 ran at a constant 190 and I had -0- problems...BUT THE PETCOCK WAS REMOVED. and a real pain in the *** to drain.

the new rad should be here in a few days and ill have it in in about 15 minutes...lol

OK KIDS....HERES THE SKINNY ON THE NEW 22" RADIATOR ON THE 440 :

since the Belvy came with a 22 inch rad...i decided to axxe the 26 incher and put in a 22. it fell right into place ( with some very minor modifications ). it showed up today and it took a bit longer to install coz i hadda clean up the MESS with the tranny lines.

the Belvy had an external cooler for the tranny mounted opposite the fan side...HOWEVER... i decided to use the internal trans cooler in the radiator and see if there would be a difference. i just got back from hammering it a bit to try to make it run hot.....i failed....it ran at a constant 185 no matter if i sat idling or was hammer down or at a 75 mph cruise....the gauge ( a good after market one) never moved off of 185.....and guess what kids....NOOOOO FANNNNN SHROUDDDDDD.

THE OLD 26 INCHER RAN AT 195......so im guessin it was clogged a bit and it HAD A SHROUD ON IT . i eliminated the shroud coz it wouldnt have fit on the 22 incher anyway...and besides,,,i think they look like KA-KA and ya dont need one anyway EXCEPT to not cut off your fingers. i will in time get something to protect hands from accidentally falling in the way of the fan. i would rather have it run at 195....but 185 will do for now....now at least i can drain it ...( no petcock on the old one ).

SO,,,the prognosis for those that have been waiting for one is...

1. the hypo'ed 440 ( pushin about 460 horsies)..runs fine with a 22 inch rad ( champion $188.00) with NO ISSUES.
2.Runs at a constant 185...but 195 would be better.
3. used the factory 22incher mounting bolts.
4. all new hoses.
5.using internal tranny cooler
6.after shut off , the gauge only went to 210.

quite safe to use a 22inch rad on a hypoe'd 440 with a 6 blade flex fan .

Ya know, a prior owner put a 26er in mine as well (it has a 22 opening). Lol, at least he let me drain mine though. but it's great news to hear that Champion doing its job - i was thinking of putting one in mine this winter 69 belve 413 - similar application.

Would you mind taking a measurement for me? I was wondering if you could take a measurement from the rad support to the motor side of the core. Clearance is a real issue in mine and i've been afraid to pull the trigger for that reason.

thanks

from the rad support to the engine side of the rad is 3 1/4 on the 66 belvedere......and 3.00 inches on the 70 Road Runner. both have champion 3 core rads in them.....belvy is a 22 inch...road Runner is a 26 inch. i measured the RR also because your 69 is probably closer th that than the 66,,,but they should be the same!

Thanks for taking those measurements. Just measured mine and it's 2-7/8" from rad support to core face. Sounds like the champion should do the job but man, i only have 1/2" between the flex fan and core as it is, so giving up even 1/8" makes me nervous lol.

Yeah, i saw the 2 core is way thinner. Thanks, i may try that. My spacer cant get much smaller because it's only about 1/2" from the crank pulley lol. Damn 413 truck motor.

....NOOOOO FANNNNN SHROUDDDDDD.

Man, you're just itchin for a 2 week ban, arent ya. :laughing1:

Mar, i trust your judgement! Im sure you could actually explain the procedure of what would be a 2 week ban, or how 2 anyway lol, please, NO examples!! lol..
