Maybe I'm a purest, or perhaps just lazy. Better yet, efficient. But I want to keep the four-wheel manual drum brake (11-inch front, 10-inch rear) setup on my car, and I'm looking for recommendations to get the best stopping power I can.

The only issue I seem to ever have with my (pretty sure they're organic) drum brakes is brake fade due to heating when traversing down mountain roadways. But this can be mitigated with engine braking braking style, but honestly, I rarely (a few times a decade) find myself driving down this type of terrain.

Aside from this, I've never had a problem stopping abruptly, stop and go traffic, highway and around-town braking. Even when I "get on it" I can brake to a stop once or twice without any (perceived) degradation in stopping power.

That said, have there been any improvements in brake shoe technologies in the last decade or two? I'm preparing to replace the master cylinder, bleed the lines, inspect the brake cylinders, grease the bearings, and overhaul the brake system.

Research suggests the semi-metallic of the 1980s are out, and the ceramic-type is the defacto standard, present-day.

I understand even in some modern vehicles, with front disk and rear drum, the rear drum may still be using organic or semi-metallic, while the front pads are ceramic. I expect the proportioning ratio on those vehicles to be adjusted for this.

I'm concerned if I choose wrong, the inherent braking ratio (front to back) may change, and cause the rear brakes to lock up. I don't like surprises, and enjoy armchair quarterbacking a project before getting started.

What do ya'll recommend for brake shoe materials front and back, if I want to keep the majority of the brake system stock?

The Absolutely Best Braking System ever --- Was and Is --- *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** Brake Shoes and Pads --- the softest , smooooooothest braking system known to mankind --- and NOT duplicated --- although they tried for 20 years, and finally said " Too bad --- use what we make ( in China ) .....

I have *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos , but would need sizes , because NO MOPAR came equipped from the factory with 11 " Fronts and 10 " Rears....
I would need to know the widths ,i.e. 11 " x 3 " , 10 " 2 1/2 "....

I have all the Brake hardware for every possible application and size , Wheel Cylinders, Brake Hoses , Bearings and Seals , and Brake Drums , Front and Rear , *** U.S.A. made....

P.M. me, as per forum rules, if interested.....

I did the Muscle Car Brakes in a box and am pretty disappointed in the overall performance. Oh, they stop but not like what I expected. Drum/Drum system.

Those “ Muscle Car Brakes “ is a very rugged braking coefficient—- very very metallic—- and very very pricey…

As LowBikeMike indicates ^^^ above ^^^ —- N O T worth the big money……

*** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** is still # 1 …..The only problem with *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** is FINDING it !!
Anti - Asbestos Laws were enacted in 1993 —- so most of these Brake Shoes are now on our pleasure cruisers in these last almost 32 years…. Getting real tough to find …….

I call BS on the play.
Asbestos linings crack when they get overheated. They also FADE quickly. I have done many many many lining upgrades...maybe i should post the pictures of the velvetouch shoes i have that were used for many high speed 140 mph stops...they got so hot the yellow paint is coming off but the linings are still stuck to the shoes and there are no signs of deterioration and the drums were fine ... go ahead put asbestos in there like it's 1970.

You seem like a doityourselfer so do yourself a favor and the rest of us idiots that suggest modern materials

From his avatar , he is from “ some other place “….
Let’s us all know he is probably NOT from this solar system….

Time for Blast Off , Mopar Miki…… Vrooooooom…..

( And your “ buddy “ Sam —- IS an idiot… I gave him a smokin’ hot deal 20 years ago as first shot —- and I sold it for MORE money further away the next month…. )

Brakes in a box work well for me. 11” all around. Manual Drums. Good modulation. I drive in some of the worst traffic in the Country. LA, and San Jose.
