What do you think is the best weight gear oil to use in a Dana 60 with 4:56 gears and a spool? Is a 75W-90 Mobil 1 good or would heavier weight be better?

I am using Mobil 1 75w-90 in mine w/4.56 gears and a Detroit Locker with good results.

yes 75w-90 is the best. i started using the synthetic gear oil recently. royal purple or redline and feel it lasts the longest. i run 3 quarts in mine with a spool.

I've been running the Mobile 1 75W-90 in mine too but have had a couple occasions where I had some oil find its way out my axle vent and was beginning to wonder if a heavier weight would be better for it.

how many quarts did you put in the dana?
it happened to me but after a little while it stops.

My notes show I added 3.5 qts after I had it fully drained. First time it came out of the vent I had made 5-6 laps around the Rockingham Speedway - very slowly. I just assumed it was due to the steep banks, slow speed and the vent being in on the left side. Then a few months ago after driving around in the downtown area of Myrtle Beach for a bit it showed a bit of loss. Haven't noticed any since so maybe it has found the best level. I was also just wondering if the 75W90 was heavy enough for the low gears and spool set up.

STUMPER rule of thumb is 3 quarts 75w-90 street car
2-2.5 quarts for all out race car.
