Perhaps you should read 440 Source's EXCELLENT write up re 440 blocks, and the explanation of the block's part and casting number explanation.....IMO....very informative.

are mid to late 70's blocks better then the 60's and 70 ones

In my opinion no, but you should read the 440 source info as linked above. A good clean virgin block of any year will probably suffice for what you're trying to do.
