Block Heater Question

I have a question about a block heater for a 440 I have it installed correctly on the passenger side of the block. Does the wire get routed under the oil pan attaching it to clips using 2 of the oil pan bolts then does the wire get clipped to the k-frame and then to the underside of the battery tray and finally clipped to the rad support.
I own a 1971 GTX that came with a block heater and if any one has a schematic showing the routing of the wire and clips used that would be great.

Did not think it was a factory option. I have always used the heater hose heaters that circulate threw the whole system and not just one side of the block. Sorry no help here.

I agree that it was not a factory option. While you probably checked the box on the option sheet, it would be a dealer installed option.

I did dealer prep in Iowa in 73 and 74 and never installed one. Maybe one had to be farther north.

One of the Chargers in our family has the order for an engine heater on the broadcast sheet. Would have look at it and see what code it is under.

I wouldn't think it is any different for a B-body, but for my '71 Challenger, the block heater is listed as code N25 under engine accessories on the build sheet.

That would explain why us in the lower states may have never seen them factory. But we don't have electrical outlets all over to plug into on city streets either. When we moved to North Dakota the wife though I was crazy when she asked what all the outlets were for.

Where in North Dakota were you? I am originally from a farm in SW ND and all of our vehicles and tractors had those block heaters. Instant heat in -30F.

I was station at Grand Forks AFB. You were on the pretty side of the state - Bad Lands area. I have relatives in the Berthold-Minot area.

The heater remains installed and the coiled up power cord is stowed and visible when hood open. Always gets noticed at car shows with people asking what the heck is that power plug for.. always a conversation starter..

Block heaters, battery warmers and electric blankets for the air cooled crowd. The neighbors vw locked up at -35. A couple hours under the electric blanket and all was fine. The wonders of living up north.

You remove the sand cast plug.
Buy the block heater, which has an element similar in shape to an element in a residential electric water heater. You then insert it where the plug was.
A cord comes with it that you plug in and then plug the other end into the 110 volt outlet.
I probably have 6 or 7 nos block heaters for various applications. Anyone need one.

Thanks for all the replies but I HAVE the block heater installed and only looking for a drawing from factory or otherwise about how the dealer ran the wire from the passenger side of the engine to the drivers side where the 110 volt plug ends up fastened to the rad support, that's what I need. Just trying to have it look correct
My car is a promo car, very low vin almost finished restoring it to a high end drivers look came with a ton of options adding the block heater to the build

Hi Ron. I don't know if you ever got the information you were looking for, but here is the factory assembly drawing for the installation of the block heater on a 1972 B Body. I'm sure it was the same for 1971 as the drawing has an August 1970 date on it. This is from page 454 of the 1971-1972 B Body Electrical and Body Assembly Manual available from Faxon Auto Literature. His manuals are available most body styles and include hundreds of factory drawings with installation procedures and processes documented. Hope this helps.
