I shipped dozens of body in white cars and trucks all over the country when I worked for Chrysler. Body in white had no vin number and were used by outside vendors that built parts to verify placement and fit. Vin number were given after they came down from paint and then were placed in sequence in the line to be built according to the customers options they ordered. I can't speak for one off's for racing. If it had a vin number, it was on book with Chrysler and the government, no losing it or heads rolled.
