Boring night

Last night I was bored and couldn't sleep so I decided to take my heater motor apart. The top of one of the pieces that go on the shaft is flat. Picture is a little blurry but you can see the top part is missing. Why would this happen?

Are you talking about the brushes? Because those do ware out, only recently have brushless electric motors become available.
