I have a 1966 Satellite and have a problem with a hard brake pedal. I have replaced the master cylinder, shoes, springs and rear drums. there isn't any change in the brakes. Is it possible that the vacuum booster is bad and how do I go about checking it. And if it is good, where else can I look to stop the hard pedal.

Check the brake power booster by pumping on the brake pedal while the car isn't running. Continue pumping until you've "bled off" the vacuum from the booster.

Then hold the pedal down while you start the car. The pedal should go down a bit more beneath your foot. If it doesn't, then you should examine the connection between the vacuum hose of the brake booster and the engine's vacuum.
Also check to make sure you have a good black rubber cap on the plastic fitting on the front of the booster where the vac hose hooks up.

When you replaced the master cylinder was it wet between it and the booster? If it was the Boosters diaphragm is most likley toast and will need to be replaced.

This is a great link for all sorts of breaking problems, just scroll down and pick your problem :)

Hey modds is it worth a sticky?

brakes

no not yet. haven't had time to check the vacuum pressure. No wetness between the booster and master. check valve ok, couldn't tell much difference when pressing the brake. the pedal is so hard it's hard to tell. Thanks for the help. I think I might just spring for a new booster anyway. then only thing left will be wheel cylinders. Gotta check the vacuum from the intake before anything though. I'll let you know
