Brake Question about 64 Sport Fury

According to NAPA's book the 11x 2.50 brakes are the biggest that was available on the 64 Plymouth but books have been wrong before too. Im pretty sure now with all the input from everyone that this is not a police car. It has no other switches on the dash like the pic that Bull1tt posted (thanks ). And has no certified speedo or the 60+ or - amp either. In fact, Im now thinking that the reverb may not be factory. (thanks khryslerkid and everyone for your input) Hey... this is the second thing that I've learned today!! (hurts my brain!! lol) The rear deck panel has been cut for more speaker holes and some of the factory holes have been enlarged also. (Boy some people don't do very neat work as the panel is kinda hacked up). fuely62 you could be right as one of the shoes is 1/4" narrower than the others.

The speaker switch for the 64-65s were a push -pull type! You would pull it down to turn on the rear speaker also if it had a reverb system! Rotate it cw or ccw to balance the speakers.

does it have a fender tag? all 426 street wedge cars came with the large brakes and sway bar on front. tag would show motor size.

Yup....always seem to learn new things about these cars!

My '62 Dodge Dart (B-Body) repro factory manual lists 11" brakes as Police Special, with 3" width in front and 2-1/2" width in rear. Your police size brakes does not mean it was actually a police car. My dad ordered new Dodges in '61, '64 and '67 and the police special options were avialable as an order item for anyone to buy, as I recall.

As for the same sized front and rear drums, it may be uncommon but is for real. My '62 Dart has 10"x2-1/2" drums front and rear and uses the same shoes F and R. With the original single master cylinder, the front to rear brake proportioning is accomplished by using smaller wheel cylinders in the rear; the braking force difference to the front shoes is 41% greater. (The shoe material is the same F and R.)

The police special 11" brakes of that year has the same F/R wheel cylinder diameters as the 10" so uses both wheel cylinder diameter difference and show width differences to accomplish F/R proportioning. (And there may be shoe material differences too.)

Hey OP....find yourself a factory servicer manual off of eBay and this info will all be there.

BTW, if you cannot get the right width shoes from NAPA, then you probably can find a good brake shop somewhere that still relines brake shoes, and can give you any width material needed to fit on you old shoe. So don't ever toss them! You used to be able to get shoe linings that were better for heat and sold under the name of 'police car lining material'.

Im learning all kinds of things about these car here on this site with all the knowledgeable people on here willing to share their knowledge. I posted a pic of the fender tag but I don't think it was a police car now or had the 426w motor. Even though it has the big brakes there are no sway bars on it. Thanks everyone, Bill
