Yesterday l completely broke down my rear drums for a good cleaning and inspection.

After I reassembled everything, l took it for a test drive. The brake warning light was on so I backed up a few times to better adjust them but the light is still on and the brakes are not grabbing all that great like they did before.

Guessing that means l need to adjust them more tighter?

Is your E Brake on? (even a little bit)

Also, if you had to beeps your rear brakes, you need to lift up on a little pin on the hood off valve (can be part of the proportioning valve or separate) if I recall correctly

Did you check fluid level? Dumb question but had same situation couple years ago

The breaks worked before I took them apart.

Emergency break was off when doing the job.

Did not open up the break lines at all, but just checked the fluid level and it's ok.

I probably didn't adjust them tight enough.

Adjustment shouldn't have anything to do with the light unless they were so loose that you blew a piston out of the cylinders stepping on the pedal. If all is ok there you may have to bleed the fronts to center the plunger in the valve. Unplug the wire at the proportioning valve an if the light goes out, that's what you need to do.

Backed out the car this am and took both of the rear drums off to better adjust the brakes to see if that would get rid of the break system warning light being on.

When I took the passenger side tire off l saw a wet oily spill on it. When I took the drum off there was break fluid all splashed all over, mystery solved, the piston is dripping brake fluid.

That side was really dirty when I took everything apart the other day. Looks like it had been dripping at some point and scabbed over. Spraying brake cleaner all over and brushing everything clean took the scab off.

That’ll do it. Great catch

Next step, what are you going to do to fix it?

I'm bringing down to a shop to get it all buttoned up.

I do what I can but this is beyond my skill set plus nobody probably turns drums any more, lol.
