The biggest problem with welding cast iron are heating and cooling too fast. Like stated above, the area must be heated first, and allowed to cool slowly. If cast gets hot too fast or cold too fast it will crack.
I did some welding for a restaurant supply when I was young and learned how to weld cast iron the hard way. Let's just say, I spent quite a few hours fixing my own damage.
