BRUTUS - Nostalgia street and strip

Take pictures and post them, Steve!

Dave, I will take pics when I go to see it. Probably put them up in a different thread so I can keep this thread in progression. Thanks all! ........................MO

Sounds good Steve!

Engine, clutch, and tranny

Next thing on the list was to get the engine ready. The tin foil is masking for the timeing chain as I painted the cover separately.
The A833 4 speed was inspected and in excellent condition. Installed new seals and gaskets
I bought a new Flywheel from 440 Source. It can be used for internal or external balance. The Centerforce Dual Friction clutch came from Mancinni. To be sure of correct clutch linkage geometry, I purchased parts I needed and trans. oil from Brewers Performance.
The engine with bellhouse and clutch assembly went in very easily with the Schummacker motor mounts. Had to be easy cause I did it with no help!
The 742 with shure grip and new 3:55gears all rebuilt, were bought from a guy on E-Bay who regularly sells Mopar rear ends. I don.t recall his name, but I was very pleased with his work. I used a 1965 axle housing with all new big rear drum brakes
When I got the Dodge running under it's own power I took it to my body man to get dents out of it. primer, and paint the door jambs and the inside of the trunk lid. The fenders and doors were done separately After I got the Dodge back home, I installed them
After I got the doors and fenders on, I took it back to the body shop for alighnment of the panels and finish sanding . That was about the first of Sept. but due to circumstances, did not get painted till last week. That brings us up to date. Color sand and buff and then Brutus will come back home!!..................................MO Motor 004.jpg64 Dodge 008.jpgDodge 034.jpgDodge 027.jpgDodge 028.jpgDodge 029.jpgDodge 031.jpgDodge 039.jpgDodge 010.jpg

A few more pics

The original gas tank was cleaned, pressure checked, and sealed on the inside. I put a tank pad on the top side. Never mind the paint slop--ya can't see it! The barn cat really is into Mopar engines.................................MOFirst Fire 002.jpgFirst Fire 003.jpgSecond Fire 006.jpg

Coming along nicely, Steve!

1964 Dodge project "Brutus" update

It has been some time since the last up-date. The car got painted and it's a very bad story with the painter. One small claims court and another coming up. You can read the story under 'I am stunned " thread
Anyway while waiting, I got the pesky tranny leak fixed--it was the back up- neutral safety switch. Not through the threads, but the wiring connections. Got he later modle PS pump hooked up the the 64 steering sector. Not as simple as it may sound . It is working good, and I think it has a better road feel than with the old pump.

I will attempt a video showing my new exhaust system and so called paint. I like the sound with stock 68-69 Roadrunner exh. manifolds -2 1/2" exhaust pipe running to homemade X pipe, Flowmaster Super 44's, 2 1/4" tailpipes.. The tips will be adjusted after I get a straight bumper installed. The white circles on the red paint show places that the painter left dents, chips, wrinkles, runs, etc. And you can't see all of the circles in this video.
BTW all the stainless and aluminum trim has been polished and ready to put on.
Lots left to do......................MO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5EUMgwy-Y4&list=UUJPx_wyPbVMaoWCA5-PaE_A

Sorry to hear about your bad deal with the painter. That sucks!! Really like the build. I just bought a 64 Savoy Wagon with the same intent. Keep the pictures coming. Tell us more specs on the engine, cam, compression, head work, etc...

Thank you, on the engine--I have a truck 413 engine that I had planned to build. I want to make Brutus period correct as we did it in the 1960's. However that will be expensive. In the meantime, I found a 1978 low compression Dodge engine. Complete and very low priced and low mileage ( no ring groove or bearing wear. ) Most people could not tell the difference between the two.

Pistons are flat tops , down in the deck a bit. It had 452 heads. About 8:1 compression. I used a pair of 516 closed chamber heads putting in hard seats in the exhaust valve hole and using new oversize valves. New , stronger, valve springs--no port work. Useing a steel shim head gasket the math works out to be about 9.5:1 compression.

The cam is one I got with other parts I obtained. All wrapped up in a towel for protection. I could not identify it by the numbers on the cam. The lift looks to be about .475 intake and exhaust. The lobes appear to have pretty good duration.

The intake manifold is a Edelbrock RPM Performer dual plane. I ground off the lettering and numbers and painted it the Mopar orange. I topped that off with a 750 CFM true double pump Holley carb. I am using the stock rebuilt 413 dist with points. Later I will put a stealthy Pertronix III ignition conversion in it. ....................................MO

Man, your going full out on this the way it should be done and it's looking sweet! I cant wait to see it all together, what a feeling knowing its all done right, clean solid and ready for the paces! Love it.... Coating the inside of the fuel tank is something i think about a lot with my 73, which is all new, i wish now i would have thought earlier (when i put it in a couple year ago) about it with the way gas is now, we DO need the protection! Im doing another now and posts like this will make me remember...

Thanks folks for the kind words. That helps me to get re-motivated. I been kinda bummed about the paint, but the end of this month is schedualed for small claims court. Hopeing we overwhelm the painter and his attorney with all the pics and witness testimony. Planning on having the car there so the magistrate can see it for himself.

Ron 73----If your gas tank was new, I don't think you have anything to be concerend about. I see advertised a liquid that you can put in your gas that protects the inside -including the top, from rust or corrosion.

Yes, I know ive read of the product your thinking and it is a good idea to do, i replaced everything with my fuel system because the tank was so full of scale rust, i added a fuel pressure control and gauge to update it a bit with an electric pump.. so far no problems and im pleased with the outcome, i don't need problems when out in the car! To many problems to have to walk LOL!!! Thanks man...

It has been a little over a year since the fiasco with the first painter. We went through all the court hoops, vigilanty justice was to be the last resort. I got the judgement, and then it was up to me to collect. Went thru the Garnishment BS and just last week I got the money-- after it went thru all the red tape.

So now back to the Brutus build. It is in another paint shop that is glad to be doing the job. I told him there would be a lot of people asking who painted it... Good PR. will bring business.
My newly straightened and chromed bumpers should be done any day now. I ordered the side trim clips and other things yesterday. First chance I get to the city, (OMAHA) I will get a new driveshaft made and new tires for the front.

I already have the grille, headlight C rings and all stainless trim polished. Anxious to get Brutus back home. There is a lot that can be done now. .......................................MO

Awesome work done on your car but why was the engine painted orange?

Hey Steve, You are doing a very nice job. I love the color combination you pick out, almost looks the same color as my coronet. Really sucks about your paint job.
