I'm getting closer to putting paint on the Satellite and I want to paint the bumpers (Silver) body color to match the car. I want to strip the chrome and have the front bumper straightened and the rear bumper trim holes welded.

What's the best way to remove the chrome? Chemical? Mechanical? Sandblast?

Can anyone recommend a local NJ shop to do this?

If after the holes are welded should the prep for paint be the same as any other painted panel? Epoxy, filler, polyester primer, paint?

Thanks for any help,

I can't recommend any places in NJ but you will have to take your bumper to a chrome shop so they can effectively remove the coating. If you are painting the bumper then yes the welded bolts would be just like the car light use of filler then epoxy/primer and paint.

I've just been through what you're looking at doing. I'm not in the area to suggest a place but my buddy who paints said just have em sandblast it down then bodywork it from there. I always thought they had to be stripped all the way down to metal. Obviously sand blast is cheaper too, out here in the republic of kalifornia it would have cost me upwards of $600 just to strip them!!!

I'm going to make mine the same as the body color on the Express. I plan to sandblast them down and then regular bodywork practices should be fine. I really have to because I added 7/8" to the center of the rear bumper and the front has had some removed and put back together as well as the turn signal holes filled in.

I have 2 cars with chrome mirrors that were sandblasted and painted. One in 1987 and the other in 2003. Both still look great.

Did the sand blasting remove the chrome or just rough it up?

I would say it took most of top layer only. The nickel layer was definatly still there. They were pitted pretry good. Those areas went to base metal.

I sand blast and have them powder coated with primer. Or you can blast and start with etching primer then prime and start bodywork, have them straightened first.
