Detail Painting Advice for Interior and Brackets

Yes I did prime before paint.
I used a black primer.
Here are the finished pics.

I also love SEM Trim Black. Just a bit of semi-gloss, not too shiny and not too flat. It goes on anything plastic with just a scuff and degreaser. I haven't used a primer and the can says it's not needed, but I sand the surface with 400 grit prior to spraying. It sprays nice and lays flat when it dries, unlike a lot of other spray-bomb paints. It's durable. It's a bit expensive but worth it.

Is the texture actually rough to the touch?

I just looked at an original Dart dash frame and it didn’t feel textured? Smooth with age?

Thanks

I have to paint the headliner trim pieces that are above the windows. Do you think this shade is gloss or a semi black? 1970- Dodge Dart 340

That I don't know, I have a Charger...but SEM also makes Trim Gloss Black, which is also very good. It's not high gloss but it does have a shine to it. I painted my grille with it.

Road Grabber,
You asked "Is the texture actually rough to the touch?"
Well, I wouldn't say it is rough, but it certainly has a texture to it.

Not sure what finish was called for on Darts, but for 1971/1972 B-bodies it calls for a suede finish.
Now you can just paint it with the SEM landau black if you want to keep the texture smooth - the REM finish is like this.

Is there a large difference between the SEM Trim and the landau black. Hard to tell from photos. Would you say the landau is flatter say for the grill? A bit of texture still?

Thanks for the replies

I would not know as I have not used the SEM trim paint.

Does it leave a bit of texture? not really - it depends on the finish of the item your are painting.

I painted my dash frame with bbq grille paint. After giving it two coats for full coverage I let it flash off and dusted paint on from a distance of about 18” until I was satisfied with the texture…

I can say Trim Black leaves no texture. It dries very flat. It will actually reveal any imperfections in the surface beneath, even scratch marks from sandpaper more coarse than 400-grit. So be sure your surface prep is good, it doesn't act like a filler. :)

The shine or sheen of the paint depends on how heavy you apply the coat, and flash off between coats. Dry is flatter and wet is shinier. The SEM is a good choice..

Would you agree that engine pulleys and brackets should be semi gloss and not gloss from the factory?
I sandblasted and painted several of my engine bay parts with POR-15 (black) and Rust Bullet (grey), it's nice and glossy. I don't know if it's correct or not, but it looks good and glossy surfaces clean up easier. I did the fan, master cylinder, power steering pump, battery tray and other parts this way.

Nice job. Thanks

I’m not sure about the dash the shade for the frame could be way off if you’re picky. SEM makes soft parts paint I would like to know how to redye the parts. I used TRIM BLACKion metal parts for everything. It lasts the longest and looks the best to me. I tried por15 metal prep on parts to neutralize the corrosion waited a week then sprayed the parts they never rusted and with stood steady impact. I did my garbage can holder for the bins out side. It’s been out there 6 years still no rust winter summer rain snow. It’s comes in satin and some differnt shades. My buddy treated a gas tank with metal prep painted it black still going strong no rust.

I’m interested in knowing how to redye the dash pads. Not paint. dye. I discovered how to dye plastic parts with acetone rit dye black. I’m going to try it again on bmw plastic parts for a car I’m going to sell in order to paint my charger. If the dye will take again I will post the procedure

So I’ve been shopping for SEM Trim Black and see different numbers on the cans. Can you tell me what can you use?

Looks great. What primer and color primer works well with the paint?
None. Sand it with 400-grit, clean with a degreaser and spray it on. Per the can directions. I also sprayed my taillight finish panel with it, after thoroughly sanding everything with 400-grit and a wipe with degreaser. This is unfortunately not the best pic as the forum downsizes the uploaded photo, but I will have some better pics in my project thread shortly, after finally tracking down some PAL nuts for the Charger emblem.

EDIT: On plastic, it bonds very well, it's the easiest spray-can paint I've ever used. In sunlight, a coat dries in 5 minutes, and always dries flat and even, never patchy or spitty. I even used it to paint white plastic pickguards on some guitars I refinished, then sprayed them with 2K clear afterwards for max durability.
