What's the proper burnout procedure for a car with a 727 and Transgo TF2 shift kit? I've been reading these things online that say to never start a burnout with a car with a 727 in first gear or else you risk the dreaded sprag failure/exploding 727...

But with a stock automatic valve body isn't my only choice to start in first gear? Because no matter if I put the selector in 1,2, or D I'm gonna be starting out in first right?

Thanks for any advice!

IMHO It's not the starting the burnout in 1st gear that is so bad as, the staying in 1st gear or the car biting hard in 1st gear after free winding in the water box, the over ruunig clutch/Sprag will turn like 10,000-12,000rpm, it's not intended to do that, try getting into 2nd or 3rd as soon as possible, also as soon as you get smoke all the way across the tire "thats enough burnout", way too many people, do way too long of a burnout, either breaking stuff or waste rubber, your just cleaning & warming the tire, not trying to melt it down... You should have a bolt in or pinned, rear "over running clutch"/Sprag either way, if you plan on racing very much at all or doing allot of down shifting or burnouts on dry pavement... If you go to a manual valve body, go with the rear band apply type, it helps to save sprags & allows downshiftng with out as much chance of grenading the trans... There is a very good book for 727 TF's... "Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook" by Carl Munroe HP-Books1399, great information, performance upgrades & tech. info...

You really need a line-loc to do it right. Takes a lot of the stress off the entire driveline.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just leave it in drive then. Based on how it acts on the street, it should shift into second pretty quick and well before I get out of the water box. I have the book you mentioned, it is a good one to have.

I start in first gear and put her into second right away, run for about 10 to15 seconds then run out of the bleach box.Whole burn out about 20 to 25 seconds

That's what I do and so far so good. The key, as mentioned, is to get out of first and in to second.

Yes the reason you don't want to do a burn out in 1st gear is because in low gear the sprag is applied. If you shock the transmission the sprag could fail. When the sprag fails it will turn the drum something like 2.5 times engine RPM. So if you leave the line and the motor goes to 6,000 RPM that will mean the drum will be turning 15,000 RPM.

The stock drum is just powdered metal and is not made to withstand that kind of RPM. When the drum fails it could take your right foot with it. I have seen pictures of trans tunnels blown apart from drum explosions.

The best money you can spend is a billet drum. They are about $600.00 but well worth the money. A bolt in Sprag is a good purchase also but the bolt in's can fail also, however they are stronger.
