Cable TV vs Internet vs Dish.....

I use wifi, so many people in my neighbourhood have it I always have a good free connection.I bought a Magic jack for $60.00 and plug it into my laptop and have free phone calls any where any time.I don't pay for cable either I just watch tv/movies off the internet. :) Helps fund my Mopar project.
What site or software do you use for your setup?

Cranky i imagine you want to know more about the cable end with all this but when i was checking some things out with Magic Jack i saved the page, thought maybe you could read a little about it in case you are interested in it, my son told me you have to have high speed internet BB i guess its called i use dial up, cant use it with dial up And you have to be running XP or newer. Hope it helps a little. Ron

Stay away from Satillite Internet at all cost, slow, weather prone and poor any where you go. cable is going to get slower and slower as more people use up the bandwidth and they are not investing in enough bandwidth in redneck country period!

No one has answered my questions on the 1st page??? Doesn't anyone feel the love for the old guy?

I have Dish Network, its ok about the same as Direct i did have, to be honest i think there all crooks in it. Had problems with both but i still use Dish, speed ch is the one i watch the most wife watches other things, we have a two hook up system so i have my own in this room. Happy hunting, 100 bucks off on direct TV would help my decision... To close to Dish to matter for me having used both.

Dish is not the same as direct TV. Itried dish for two months and sucked. It went out over nothing. I replaced it with direct and have been happy for six years now. Plus its cheaper than dish or cable.

I have cable from our no choice/only thing available/small town. I have not investigated the dishes for sometime now. I used to have one years ago.

My questions are:

1. Can you get high spped internet service through them?

2. If so, what is the download/ buffering like on it for things like Netflix?

Im sorry, i seen this before but couldn't help you much. I have Dish Network, It itself does not have high speed internet service, however if you were to have it and called them they would refer you first to your phone company for what you already have or a place like Hughes net or something like that. Hughes net can but there smallest price per month is 70 some dollars that right now i just cant do, hopefully in the near future were going to try but i have to have a credit card which i do not use so i need to get one, i cant just send them a check, against there policy. i cant see this helping much but if you havent heard of that Hughes Net (spelling may be wrong) You could try them maybe. As far as buffering, if you do call them ask them, maybe they can tell you. Hope it helps you some Ron

Well i havent had direct now for almost 4 years, ive had problems with both, ive talked to people that hate one love the other back and forth. i do know there all expensive, direct may be cheaper then dish, i wouldn't know, we have dish so were staying with them for now, your right, loose signal a lot no argument. but thats the problem i had with direct also. I cut down two trees that helped. Ron

I live in the stix, but I have wi-fi from a provider for about $30 month. Good deal for the service provided. Also like my direct-tv satty also. And I'm the first to bitch if there is an issue. But so far, OK.

Well im not going to comment on this dsl again being its a thread for cranky looking for a new satellite/cable that he may like better. But our phone does have dsl i cant get it because were to far away from the conjunction box's that make it possible. We cant get any service thru our lines for it, from them or others who have such. Thanks...

Satellite companies such as Dish Network and Direct TV do not offer a "Satellite based" internet connection. However it does exist through a company like DIGIS (this is the company here in Utah, yours is probably different). The current price I saw is 34.95 a month for 7mbps. Is this super fast? No, it's not going to be as fast as what Comcast can offer but is it fast enough for non gamers or those who don't do a lot of peer-to-peer sharing, absolutely. Also keep in mind that if you don't have the latest greatest modem (DOCSIS 3.0) then you aren't getting the highest possible transmission rate anyway. I had to upgrade my modem in order to get the 12 mbps rate to function like it should.

Sorry Cranky Ive been working a lot of hours,no time to log in :(
I just google what I want to watch. Some times I use cool3.net or watchmovies.com youtube has shows like Gearz. I have my computer hooked up to my lcd tv so we all can watch it.We buy each other movies at X-mass and have a big family/friend movie swap going on all year lol.

We had both Dish and Direct TV back and forth (my wife likes to switch things for the intro rates and then switch again, etc but I don't like the cancell sales pitch hassle) and one really wasn't any better or worse. We've been on Dish for the last 5 years because it's about $10 a month cheaper. They both (as well as cable, which we have for internet) dick you for an extra $5 here and an extra $2 and $3 there, which they NEVER tell you unless you read all the asterisks and ask specifically what your actual bill will be - ALL INCLUSIVE. It is NEVER the price they advertize.

Anyway, the Dish is fine unless it's really cloudy. Which CAN SUCK if it clouds up with 10 laps to go.

My brother had HughesNet for internet and was paying $80 a month for the same speed (down) as DSL (what my mom pays $30 for) and up speed was dialup.

We have Vonage for phones, and if we didn't have a bandwidth hog of a (step)son, it would be fine. When he's really hammering the connection, the phone cuts out for the other party. It's advertized as $15 for the limited minutes, but I'm actually paying $22, which is still better than my last Verozon bill from 5 years ago, which was $35 and long distance was extra.

Our son keeps wanting us to get a bundle- phone/TV/internet, but everytime we "do the math" it comes up a wash on cost, or about $5 more or less than what we currently pay, without any of those hidden charges.

Well, I called Dumbcast the other day and went to the 'change/cancel service' section and asked them for a price quote for just the internet and the guy was real nice and asked if I was about to change my service to dish or another provider and I said yes. He offered to take 45 bucks off my bill for the next year....ok. We'll see how that goes. Should have done that a long time ago!

Yea, hope it works out. Bet i couldn't get away with that with dish..

Well, my total bill went from 240 to 170! I did drop a couple of premium channels too that we were not watching that much but for the most part, it looks like I got the 45 buck discount plus the difference of the premium channels. I'm feeling better for now....

Sounds like you came out on the winning end for sure.. I could do without much of any selection of channels as long as i have speed and the locals.. I don't know if anyone can still get that converter box they had out when they switched over anymore or not. Wife another story, she likes all the movies. Good luck with it, you should be good for at least a year with your deal.
