I'm at a crossroads right now and in need of some input. I have a 383 in my 69 runner and I think it may need significant work. I am thinking of just dumping a 440 in her, but, I would like to here what upgrades and or builds many of you have done and what results you have, either documented (dyno) or believed, and what are you using your engine for?street/strip. I'm looking to be at around 400 to 425hp on pump gas with a 4 speed. I am interested in any combinations, even if they would put me outside said parameters. I have tried to look throughout this site but there are hundreds of thousands of posts. thought it might be nice to compile some builds in one spot. if there is a thread that covers this somewhere, please show me the way.

Thanks Daryn

PS I would like to be able to keep my air grabber but not a necessity.

Being more specific, include carbs, intakes and headers too

I am working on mine now and a lot of thought and research was put into it.
I started with a 67 non HP engine and I am adding the following

Fresh 915 closed chamber heads with new 2.08 intakes and 1.74 exhaust valves and competion cams springs, retainers and locks
Purple cam P4452993 "hydraulic" with anti-pump up lifters.
Holley Street Dominator intake
Carter 750 cfm Competition carb
Headman 1 3/4" headers w/2 1/2" exhaust
Pertronix Ignitor II coversion and a Flame thrower II coil

This is connected to a 727 with manual valve body and a 2500 converter in a 3200# car with 3.23 gears.
The heads alone should give me a full point but I still should be able to run pump gas.

Have you given a 3.75" stroke any thought, and go to 430ish cubes.

Are you asking me??

I have thought of many ways to go, that's why I was asking for input. Did you go that way? and if you did, I'm asking what you did, exactly, and with which products, and to what results did you experience?
I did think of the stroker avenue and have read some of the threads regarding this. Did you do it?

No I haven't, just wondering what you might consider as I have a buddy who has and I could get his specs and results if your serious about it.

I have had great success with 383's. Easy 13 sec street car (with street tires) can be done with a mild 383. Here is my experience on a couple:

Stock cast piston short block but rebuilt. I don't know for sure what my compression was but the pistons were stock replacement for the 69 Road Runner. Isky hyd cam .465" / 280 on a 108 lobe separation. 700 Holley DP on a Torker. Pocket ported 915's with stock valves. 1.75" x 3" headers. 3.55 SG rear end. Full bodied 68 RR ran 13.50-13.70 @ 105 MPH every time I took it to the track. This was with a 4 spd.

Later I built another 383 but with more cam and compression. This time I have zero deck forged pistons with the same 915 heads. MoPar .528" cam. 1.875" x 3" Hookers. Torker with 750 Vac secondary. Same 3.55 SG rear end. Same 68 RR ran 13.30's on street tires with the original auto tranny and with a 4.88 Dana it went 12.65 @ 107.

Meep, what kind of rpm were you turning with your 383's?

6000 without thinking twice and almost daily! Damn that 4 spd was fun! My second motor went through the lights on a 26" slick at about 6300 RPM. Stock converter too.
