Hi guys, not an unusual request, but i'm looking for a cam recommendation. My 340 has 10.1 compression, the smaller valve J heads, genuine 340 manifolds and twin exhaust system. I'm
looking for a cam that will pull a heavy B body (73 'Runner) with 3.23 gears. Like the car to be lively, but drivable with power brakes.
In my old Dart I had good luck with a Comp XE262H cam which used near stock valve springs and stock convertor.
Thanks.

The 114 deg lobe separation should provide for a snappy running engine. You might check with Crane about its use with 10:1 CR, but from a glance it looks like it will do well. I will make a note of this grind for future reference.

I have a 69 340 GTS Dart and it has the stock cam with the factory compression as far as I know. It will just destroy a set of rear tires with the 3.23 gears if I let it.

Thanks guys. Keep em coming. This is my first B body so I'm aware that the car is heavier than my old Dart. Recommendations on stall appreciated.

That cam will work with a stock stall. I wouldn't go and more than a 2200. With 3.23 gears, you want the converter locked up as much as possible. Going 2500 or more and the converter will be loose at highway speed. That'll cost mileage and build up a lot of heat. I would just get a reman stock high stall for it.

Thanks for the good advice Rusty. I've also been looking at the Lunati voodoo cams, the 02 and 03 models which have a similar profile to the Summit cam above.

That's not a Summit cam. It's a Crane. That's gonna be a really tough grind to beat with your combination. I think I would run it.

A quick story about that cam. About 20 years ago, I had a 71 Dart, 2 door HT. It had a 318 and already an 8 3/4 with a 3.23 sure grip. That's how I bought it. I found (coincidentally) a 71 360 in a local salvage yard. Now, I was BROKE. I mean dirt road broke, but I wanted some kinda little street car. I tore down the 360, and cleaned it all up myself. Dawn dishwashing detergent and hot water and a wire brush. I re rung the standard pistons and put new standard bearings in it. Put that Crane cam in it. Put the MP electronic ignition on it. Put a stock 340 intake and thermoquad on it and headers. Oh and I had a short Mopar Pro scoop that was functional and sealed to the hood. That's ALL. I built the 904 and it just happened to have the factory high stall already in it. Put a trans go TF2 shift kit in it. First time out at the track with the 3.23s and borrowed slicks it went 13.99 @ 101 plus MPH. I like to fell out. I switched to a borrowed 4.10 gear set and it went 13.60s but the MPH fell off to under 100. That was a fun little car. I didn't blueprint anything but it couldn't have had 8.5:1 compression. Was probably more like 8:1.

That's a great story! Ill definitely keep that cam in mind now!

Still tempted by that Crane cam, especially after Rustys story. It looks to be a good stage up from the stock 340 cam. Will it provide sufficient vacuum for the brakes? Just don't want to overcam the car and have too little torque in lower rpms
