Cam help!!

while swapping my intake back to stock on my 383 b block .

i took a closer look at my cam. the only thing i could see that would help identify it was orange and turquoise paint on it by the distributor gear. I DO NOT WANT TO PULL THE CAM OUT TO MYKE IT. can anyone give me a little insight on this cam or at least throw me in the right direction.

You could throw a dial indicator on the rocker arm and measure the lift of both intake and exhaust. This would give you some direction to travel in your search... Is it a hyd flat tappet / roller cam/ solid flat tappet???
Those answers and the measurements you get are about all you can do with it in the car..... I guess you could throw a degree wheel on the balancer and figure out the duration too.....
 
Thanks for the input...don't care to much about the numbers side of things right now, I can worry about that when I pull the engine apart in the future.

Good point, and no it wouldn't. Doubt you can have the plunger 100% solid for the test. One thing that can be done is to gut an old hyd lifter and fill it with epoxy or make a spacer. Whatever it takes to make it "solid". Using a solid lifter will work but the pushrod length requirement is different.

A single solid lifter purchase would fill the need.....
I you dont mind pulling the camshaft while things are torn down, you could just mic the cam itself... Measure the tallest part of the lobe, then the smallest part and subtract the two. Take that and multiply by 1.5 to get what the listed lift would be.
 
Can he put the dial indicator in the lifter gallery, and measure the lift on the cam (before or after the lifter contact area), then do the 1.5X multiplier?

Yup,,, the plunger could rest right on the lifter itself..... Then 1.5 like you stated.
