Cam Selection Help - 383 stroker

Hello all, i am trying to decide between the two cams listed below. One is the XE274 and the other is the XE274 High Lift version. Which one would be better for my application? I am building a 383 stroker (450) with 440 source heads, Holley street dominator intake. Its a 4 speed manual trans with 3:23 gears out back. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Really should list more info like compression ratio, converter, rear gears, compression height of the pistons and if they have valve reliefs, heads (open or closed chamber) and anything else you can think of....

10:1 compression, 440 Source aluminum heads, closed chamber, 3:23 rear end gears, A833 manual 4 speed. 1969 Roadrunner.
 
What's your driving style? Are you street driving or drag racing? Do you want power at 6000 rpm, or are you more interested in lots of grunt when you floor it at 2000 rpm in 4th gear?
3.23 gear is one thing, but what is your tire size, and weight of the car?

Comp Cams or 440 Source should be able to steer you in the right direction.
 
There isn't a ton of difference between both of those cams other than one is designed for .904 lifters.. Photon is very much on the right track. You need to ask your self where you want to feel the power, down low or at 6000+ RPM.

I have the XE274 Cam in my Satellite, but I have 3.73 gears, 2800 TC and expect to whind up my 383. It's not all the economical to drive 60 mph at 3000 rpms, let me tell you.

With your gearing and I presume a B-Body at 3800+LBs. I would suggest something milder. Lunati Voodoo 268/276 might be easier cam to get along with.

Yes, its a 69 Roadrunner so the weight you mentioned is about right. Its gonna be a street car so it needs to fit that type of application. I called Comp and those were the two they advised, i think the normal XE274 version would be the most i need.
 
After doing some more research I've been told the Comp XE274 or a Lunati Voodoo 10230704 (276/284) or 10230703 (268/276) would all be good choices. I do hear the the Comp XE stuff can be a bit noisey. 440 source only suggests the Comp stuff since that's what they use. Since its a street car i am mostly concerned with off the line and mid range power. I may go up from 3:23 to a 3:55 rear gear if needed. I'm not an engine guru so i am relying on advice from this site and the manufacturers to help me select the right cam. Anyone have experience on the Lunati stuff? Again, i am at 10:1 compression based on my specs and Muscle Motors info.
 
Steve Dulcich once said. If your caught between 2 cams, go with the smaller of the 2. You'll be happier with the results. Good Luck
 
Yes, thats the cam in question. After talking with the person who designed the cam i decided to go with it. He felt that for my setup it would be the best bet and also not be too aggressive.
Old thread, but , Nick's garage on youtube is putting together a 383 stroker,440 crank etc informative video. Motor is going into a '70 roadrunner convert.
 
The second cam you have listed is actually the XE275 HL. For a 450 stroker I would use this one. I have one in my 72 with a 440 stealth heads 3000 stall and 3:91 gears. Runs great.
 
The 275HL is the one for you, with those rear gears. I have run the 275HL in a Duster with a MoPar 360 10:1 shortblock (came with the too radical .508" cam, 248*@.050") and Edelbrock RPM heads, and 3.23 gears. Worked fantastic, with a 2500 stall, it had power from bottom to top RPM. I run a custom 285HL (intake lobe) that I spec'd from Comp, 285/300*-241/[email protected]"-.545"lift-112LSA in my (heavy! 5300#) wagon's 446 RB, and it's plenty streetable with a 2500 stall, and more gearing than you have. With that 4spd, you'd likely need 4.10s to get away with the 285HL on the street.
