73 RR, 400ci 4spd. When attempting to find out what the timing was, I discovered that at TDC- rotor pointed to #1 position on the cap, piston stop verifying piston location at the top of cylinder and this is happening immediately following #1 cylinder intake valve closing and exhaust valve closed- the balancer read 20 degrees. I figured that the balancer had slipped as I've read here in many posts. So I pulled it off, and since I'm here I figured that it would be cheap insurance to replace the timing chain especially since I have little knowledge of what's been done to the car. After getting the timing cover off, I discovered that the cam dowel and the crank keyway are not in the right positions to install the new timing set in the dot to dot configuration. It's a Lunati Bracket Master Hydraulic Flat tappet cam. Maybe a little better than stock. I will upload some pictures of what I found and of the cam specs according to the Lunati website.
Do I need to remove the cam and reinstall it so that it lines up? Obviously I really don't understand what I am doing here so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Pictures to come momentarily!

It will point to number 6 when dot to dot on that chain. The key way is always about 1-2 o clock when they are dot to dot as well

Perhaps the "dot to dot" of your new timing set is not quite right and previous installer of cam actually degreed the cam properly?! You will never know unless you degree the cam again with new timing set. You don't need to remove the cam either way, but you need to remove drivers side rocker cover or intake to get dial indicator on rocker or lifter in order to degree. Or you can just rotate cam so it all lines up dot to dot, BUT you'll never know how close to ideal it is installed. It's not unusual to see quite a few degrees inaccuracy. I always degree a cam when installing. It's not hard, and you need a piston stop (which you have), a degree wheel and a dial indicator. PS - A 292 adv duration/109 deg LSA cam is quite a bit bigger than stock!!
 
Yes, that is quite a bit more cam than stock. Have you tried having the camshaft gear dot at the top, with the crankshaft dot at the top, looks like it will be close, I think that is how the factory does it. Dot to Dot works as well, spin your cam 180 to see how it lines up.
