I have a 1970 Roadrunner with a 440 motor, six barrel, 4 speed and 410 gears. It is also outfitted with E Street heads (350-5093), Edelbrock cam (350-2192), headers, MSD distributor and ignition. The current cam is no hotter than stock and l am looking for suggestions on an upgrade. I want a high performance street car with great sound. Any ideas?

I ran a Mopar 509 with my 6 pack set up and had very good luck with it. Also soundid Great !

Yep !(old grind #) I even ran a 4 speed and 4:56 rear gear.
Was tubed with 32" tires but I realy liked that set up !!

Excellent, l had the hemi grind purple shaft in my 340 Duster 35 years ago. Great cam!

Yes Sir ! I think it worked Very well with the six pack. Worth a looksy for sure !! Plus not all that costly to boot !!

You are right for the set up you are running the cam is small. I am running the XE274 because a have 323 gears. It has strong bottom end torque plus it pulls hard up to 5800 rpm and it sounds good at idle. I have a 2300 converter you didn't mention what type of converter you have. With the heads and gears you are running I would at least use the XE284 cam. I have heard the XE284 in a 440 and it sounds pretty mean. Once you get over 1/2 inch of lift the stock rockers may have a problem. I was concerned with vacuum to run my power brakes or I would have run a XE284. I know a lot of guys like to run a custom grind cam but I see very little horsepower difference between cams about the same size. Remember it is easier to live with a cam that is a little too small than one that is too large. Even the XE274 would be a big improvement for you. Just remember to degree the cam to make sure it is correct. You will find lots of different opinions when it comes to cams. I ran the purple cam a long time ago but there are better cams out there today.

He says he has a 4 speed in his post....

70RR: where in Ohio are you?
I use the MP 590 solid setup in my 440 and 4.10:1 gears... What kind of compression are you working with?

Yeah you're right I didn't notice the 4 speed.

I have a 68 GTX with the Edelbrock 2087 Top end kit which is RPM heads and Intake, and hedman headers. Memphis Comp cam reccomended the following cam even though the kit came with a .495 lift cam. This has .545 lift but does require adjustable rockers which I bought from them as well.

Not sure about the compression, need to test it. Im guessing 9.5-10.

Hey, 70 RR, did you have batch of air grabber springs for sale a few years ago? Think I bought one from you for my 70 RR. I'm in North Royalton.

Hi Greg, no that wasn't me. I think I may have spoken to your brother at the car night at Laurel Square, he mentioned a brother that lived in N. Royalton. If not brother, maybe just a friend? He said you had a six barrel RR. Is that you?

Okay then..... 10.0:1 should support most of your streetable camshaft options....
I'm about 96 miles from you in Carey, Ohio...

Just a comment regarding cams and street cars that are driven often. Stay on the mild side not the wild side. High overlap cams make a ton of power in the upper mid range but don't do you any good down low. You can actually do damage to your engine if you lug around town all the time because you are asking the engine to run in the RPM range it wasn't designed to run in. Like Bill Cosby said "you got to get the guk out" but not on any side street.

Thanks for that, I will take it into consideration. I drive the car on weekends mostly and the 6 weeks I am off during the summer. I do have a "heavy foot" and I'm not much of a "lug around town guy!" LOL I do understand your point and I won't go too radical. I hope..... Honestly though, we are all here because we like to tear up pavement and make noise, am I right?

I am actually thinking of milling the and porting the heads, changing the springs and rockers and going with a roller cam. The motor has a lot of potential and I want to unlock it. Speed is just a question of money, right?

I have heard of Carey, I work for UPS as a Triples driver on the turnpike but before that I was a package sorter. I used to remember the zip code for Carey but the was over 27 years ago.

Absolutely we like to tear up pavement. But if you build a pavement shredder you must drive it like one. Porting the heads for optimum low lift flow is good but increased CFM is of little value. The idea is to make something that plays well in the 1500 RPM to 5000 RPM window. Strokers are great for this because they allow you to have a milder cam profile (wider LSA) and still shred the tires down to the bead.
