Camshaft help

Thanks for that, I will take it into consideration. I drive the car on weekends mostly and the 6 weeks I am off during the summer. I do have a "heavy foot" and I'm not much of a "lug around town guy!" LOL I do understand your point and I won't go too radical. I hope..... Honestly though, we are all here because we like to tear up pavement and make noise, am I right?

I am actually thinking of milling the and porting the heads, changing the springs and rockers and going with a roller cam. The motor has a lot of potential and I want to unlock it. Speed is just a question of money, right?

I have heard of Carey, I work for UPS as a Triples driver on the turnpike but before that I was a package sorter. I used to remember the zip code for Carey but the was over 27 years ago.

I started a week ago last Monday, and found out today my Proform Vacuum advance distributor was not providing enough spark for the larger cam engine. I order the MSD 8546 distributor and the 6AL box which gets my parts list up to $7k and I thought I would be in the $4500 range.

Absolutely we like to tear up pavement. But if you build a pavement shredder you must drive it like one. Porting the heads for optimum low lift flow is good but increased CFM is of little value. The idea is to make something that plays well in the 1500 RPM to 5000 RPM window. Strokers are great for this because they allow you to have a milder cam profile (wider LSA) and still shred the tires down to the bead.
My old junker runs pretty darn good on the street,,,,,

Hi Greg, no that wasn't me. I think I may have spoken to your brother at the car night at Laurel Square, he mentioned a brother that lived in N. Royalton. If not brother, maybe just a friend? He said you had a six barrel RR. Is that you?

Yep, my big brother. He has a 71 Runner.

.484 MP will work with stock valvetrain, modest performance and sounds good. I have one in a '71 383 that certainly sounds the part but the performance gains are limited because of the low compression with stock 71 HP pistons, plus the gears I have. Wouldnt choose it again for this motor but it would likely work well with your setup and goals.

I hear what you are saying but I've been told that the E Street heads are pretty weak and need to be given a facelift. I want to go with a roller cam, so I need to change the valve springs and swap out the rockers also. I'm not going too radical on the cam but I am running 410 gears so RPM isn't too much of an issue. I am going to sit down and crunch some numbers to see what will be the best cam for my application.

Hey rocketman, how did you find this out? What coil were you running with it?

Take a look at Comp Cams Extreme Energy series. Put one in my 383 when we did the rebuild. Awsome, it will make your hair hurt. Wakes up about 1800 RPM's then Katie bar the door.

Hurt my hair, thanks for the chuckle, just curious what your setup is?

I've been searching for the right cam for my 451 stroker project as well. I've spoke to quite a few reputable sources and i am getting some very different opinions. At first I was set on the Comp XE series but have been put off by the complaints on the amount of noise they create due to the high ramp designs. They do seem to create lots of power but this is still a concern for me as its a street car. I've recently started looking at the lunati voodoo series and seems they get good reviews. They have a 268 and also a 276 that look like decent choices. I'm running a 69 roadrunner, 451 stroker, 10:1 comp, 4 speed manual and either 3:23 or 3:55 gears so this may be different than your application.

The E-Street heads aren't weak, they have an intended purpose, to raise compression with smaller 75cc {& 84cc} combustion chambers {smaller than the RPM's open chambers 88cc, or factory 90+cc} & have basically the same ports/shape/casting as the RPM's flow 290cfm intake & 217cfm exh. @ 0.600 gross valve lift {not that your at that flow area}, lessor valve springs for milder/stock type combos, they're aluminum replacement heads for low compression engines, but they still will out flow any production Iron head, hands down, Out of the box, even at only a mild 0.450"-0.490" gross valve lift...

You will still make more HP/TQ at ever RPM level, over the stock heads, flow is flow, done & tuned correctly, you should have a noticeable increase... Period

A little pocket work maybe & better valve springs, for your intended usage, a good & well tuned carb & hotter ignition wouldn't hurt, especially if your going to spin it over the intended 1500-5500 RPM range limits, that they recommend... I'm not a big fan of the Edelbrocks Camshaft profiles really, there are far better options out there, depends on what you want to do, what style to use... IMHFO anyway...

Call a reputable camshaft mfgr, be 100% honest what you intend to use it for & what your expectations are, then listen to them & do what they say...

I rarely give camshaft recommendation, I'll leave that to the professionals, so subjective, with out all the necessary information 1st off, but I do run allot of Crane Cams stuff thou, it's served me very well, over many years...

My is the same but my range is 2500-6200, it is daylight and dark compared to the stock 440.

I wanted an engine that would operate well around town, would go when you asked it too, and sounded nasty.
So here's my set up good or bad. .040 over Keith Black pistons, Milodon valves, Crane springs w/ Crane Ductile rockers, Mancini Custom push rods. Comp XE cam #CL21-224-4, Melling oil pump, 440 stock heads milled and polished, Edelbrock Aluminum intake, Holley 770 w/stock Carter fuel pump, and an ole Crane Fireball ignition. Runs about 9.4 to 1.
I built this rr to drive and not race. So far this setup has preformed quite well and you don't have to fight it at the lower end around town but it will put you in the back seat when you wake it up. The Holley 770 was the real icing on the cake.
It's a Fetters Motor, need I say more.
Thanks for asking.
Dale

P.S. It's a 4 speed car w/ manual 4 wheel discs & manual steering.

So you are happy with that Comp Xtreme Energy cam? I am curious about the idle. I had a guy build me a short block 383 with forged flat tops and that same stick. Actually, I didn't choose the cam. I wanted a Wjiplash, but he insisted this Comp is the way to go. I have never been a fan of Comp Cams. This one sounds quite mild to me. I am not going crazy with my Charger though. I want it to idle like a muscle car, not a station wagon. I have yet to install the motor and have entertained the thought of swapping out the cam before I do. Mopar guys tend to migrate toward the same cams and this Comp doesn'tget talked about very much, which tells me it iisn't very popular.

Only have a short time on this engine as still working through some of the final details on the restore. But Idles about 1200 and sounds great, like a muscle car should. My engine was done by Fetters, one of best in this area, by appointment only. This is the one they recommended for best all around. Any wilder and it would be rough at the low end around town / cruise in's etc. So far I'm very happy with that choice. This is a driver car.
Thanks
Dale
