can anyone telll me what this noise might be?

How old's the H2O pump? Hard to tell without being there. Do you have a stethoscope to narrow it down? The only other thing to do is disconnect the belts and see if it goes away. Good Luck

Hmm,
Not lifters I do not think but you should REV the engine a bit so "we" the forum can hear better.
Could be a loose rocker arm on the push rod I suppose but, hard to tell.
Almost like a accessory item, perhaps?
I think it is something simple
A loose rocker Arm WILL increase in tempo (the rattle) with RPM

Pull a valve cover off and feel your rods...

Do as 69A100 said, Isolate the accessory item belts to Isolate
Also 69A100 suggestion about a stethoscope is a "best bet"
I have a couple of them.

not really sure how old the water pump is, this noise just started last time I had the car out...it's getting a bit louder now. I only have taken it out to cruise nights/short trips. but I will check that. thanks!

Almost reminds me of a loose timing chain hitting against the cover.
Check what was mentioned above. If it's still there, you could check the play in the timing chain by removing the distributor cap. Turn the crank pulley back and forth while watching the distributor rotor and see how much it takes before it moves.
Good Luck!

if it's the timing chain...will the rattle increase with the engine revs?

It would but like I said, try removing your accessory belts first. Then if you still have the noise remove your valve covers and inspect your rockers for excessive play. Think simple first. Makes it easier on yourself...

well...I feel like an idiot- the belt was dry...sprayed some lube on it and the noise disappeared.
I'm okay with being an idiot w/out an engine problem!

I think we all have been there a time or 2, isn't it fun to feel like a jackass sometimes? Glad it was a easy fix.

Wow! Listing to the video it sure sounded metallic. I guess you loose the full effect thru a video.
Glad you nailed it without any expense!

Well good news/bad news....I'm still an idiot!! The PS pulley flew off on my way to a car show. I pulled up to a light-it flew off-light turned red-I picked it up and the belt and continued to the show.
Driving manual steering w a torn rotator cuff was fun...said no one EVER

Sounds like you have the problem narrowed down lol

Was it just the pulley that let loose?

yep...better that than the WP. the pulley is not damaged, the nut must've backed out. ordered a new locking nut.

I didn't think it would take long for something to let go because it didn't sound like a dry belt to me ... :icon_thumleft:
