Can someone tell me what this is?

Hello. I'm currently working on my first car project and I'm re-wiring my 71' Plymouth Satellite. I came across this and can't seem to figure out what it is. I can't find it online or even in pictures of others cars. Tracing back the wiring is useless since the previous owner hacked everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bryan

Not sure - it's not the ballast resister is it. Looks kind of like one.

Looks like part of the California clean air vacuum advance/retard module that works with the speed sensor coming off the speedo cable of my 1972 318 Satellite Sebring Plus. (hey, my home town was San Jose: Arroyo Seco Drive)

Your welcome, but I thought this was a '72 item, and you said you had a '71? Mine is still attached to the firewall, not operating and not sure what I want to do with it yet.

Yeah it's 71' Satellite Sebring Plus w/318 (according to the vin though no Sebring Plus badges, previous owner may have taken them off as it was painted once before). Not sure if mine was a mid year maybe and that's why it has it? Where is your electronic ignition module and ballast resistor mounted? Mine were mounted on the driver side inner fender.

Don't be too quick to pull emission parts off of a California car. I'm not sure what their laws are out there for '72 cars, but that's an emission part.

My 318 had the points distributor, no electronic ignition module.

Lots of times the Fed would mandate new laws that went into effect on the first of the year so it's possible it could be a mid year change. Don't know what California required for 1 Jan 71 but 72 was the first year for electronic ignition in the rest of the free world but only the high performance cars got it in 72. All other cars got it in 73....that is in the rest of the free 49 states.

Pre 75' is exempt from emission regulations. I'll be putting it on a shelf though just in case California decides to change that for some reason
