i have a 22x19 radiator in my 65 coronet. it's 4 row with 1/2" tubes, 3/8" spacing. no air but does have the factory shroud and coated headers. it won't run hot, even in last summer's 100+ heat. my 69 r/t has a 22x19 factory radiator, 3 row with 1/2" tubes 7/16" apart. the 69 runs hot in the summer, about 110-115 degrees above ambient temps. the 69 engine is stock, cast iron exhaust manifolds that get over 700F, ramcharger fresh air stuff. i think the key to using the 22" radiator is good air circulation under the hood (something the 69 doesn't have), no exhaust manifolds, and plenty of tubes in the radiator to transfer heat.
also depends on how"suped up"the eng is.more power meens more heat.air flow is your key here.widest radiator you can fit is also important.try what you have and go from there.
I've used a 22" radiator upto even 540ci, but with an aux. electric fan, didn't really need the fan unless I got stuck in bumper to bumper or slow cruise stuff, always use a good clean unbstucted, well flowing, quality radiator... IMHFO more rows the better, if you have the room...
something to think about if your going to recore a radiator. if the bottom tank is 2" wide you can only get 3 rows to fit into it. a 2 5/8" bottom tank will take 4 rows.
Does anyone know if the later model plastic 22" radiator shrouds will bolt up to a '64 22" radiator? Maybe w/some modification? I am not worried about original appearance as the car already has a 440.
