Canister under dash

What is the little canister under the dash that looks like a long narrow flasher? It connects to my map light harness

I installed a time delay dimmer from classic industries, not sure if this will affect the purpose of the canister

Pictures would help. It sounds like the ignition key light timer.

Did a bit of research and thats exactly what it is.. Does it dim all the console lights and the dome lights? Do i need one if i bought a dimmer box to delay the lights goin off? Thanks
