Cannot figure out how to connect driver remote mirror

I cannot figure out how to mount the control for my drivers side mirror on a 68 RR. There is a outer bezel nut but nothing to hold it from behind.

The chrome ring unscrews, then the lever assy comes from the inside towards out. After that, screw the chrome ring back on.

There should be a very thin metal plate with one way tabs that goes up against the door on the inside.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I'm missing the retainer. Is there somewhere to order just that part?
