Can't shift into Reverse Gear (4-speed)

Although not the cause of the problem, but may help in future...

I got into the habit of coming to a complete stop before selecting reverse. And I always made my way to reverse by selecting 2nd gear quickly, and then into reverse. That also helped to stop the synchronizer rings spinning enough to prevent any graunching of the teeth....if that makes sense.

It's hard to see the size there, but the "alignment pin" is the short pin there, right? ...like maybe 1"-1.25" ??
The alignment pin is only 5/8" long. It goes into the 1-2-3-4 plates. The jig pulls the reverse plate back flush with the other 2.

Well, I was wondering why that tool had to be so complicated.

So... if I use a drill bit or whatever to "peg" the 1-2 & 3-4 plates (the peg goes thru holes in those plates?) .... then, without having that tool, what else do i need to do to get the reverse plate back flush with the other two? Why wasn't there a hole on the reverse plate to "peg" it flush with the others? (it doesn't overlap them they way they overlap each other?)

It's next to impossible to see up into that mechanism to fully understand.

I am just guessing, but the short peg on the tool was probably made that way so it can be installed easier when the shifter is bolted up in the car. I believe the reverse plate does have a hole in it. Just use a bolt or drill bit like Kiwi showed in a previous post. Get all 3 plates flush with the housing at the rear and you should be good. You are over thinking the process and it will make sense once you are under there....
