carb size suggestions for 440 stroker engine

66 Coronet 500 4 speed car, fresh rebuild on engine, new lifters, cam, and pistons. This is an Indy 440 stroker, Indy Alum 440EZ1 cylinder heads, Indy single plane manifold, electric fuel pump, overall compression around 10 to 1, Lunati cam .535 in/.550ex, duration at . 50 Tappet lift is 231in/239ex. Roller rockers and lifters, 373 gears, 4 speed. Looking for street performance. Looking for suggestions on carb size and type. I realize there may be different opinions but all suggestions welcome!

950 CFM W/Mechanical secondaries. You could go smaller or larger...but It really depends on how you are ultimately going to use your car. 950 CFM would be a good all around compromise.

mileage not a concern, car usually short trips and has regular fuel tank. With gears, it doesn't do highways well anyway.

A good ole 850dp with the 1.56 Venturi would surely do the job. A 950 proform, or new hp carb would work well. I built a 1050an carb from a 850 street series proform a few months back. Runs real well on my 511, I had to dial back the amount of fuel it was getting through the transfer slots. Once I got that right it Runs exceptionally clean and gets good mileage for being a big carb.

cam sounds kind of small for those heads on a stroker. It will certainly run well with a 4 speed though. I also would go 950 qf procomp or Holley. 800 edelbrock will leave power on the table. How do I know? I inherited my 800 from someone who tried it on a max build and was disappointed. Runs very well on a stock headed big block but i would not pick it for indys.

yep cam on small side, took milder of 2 options from engine builder since mainly street car doing local runs, no plans to run at the strip but I do like fast street car. I bought car with stroker, couple years later cracked a cast piston (Indy) and wiped out cam and lifter so had to do rebuild. Probably gonna go with the 950. It had a Holley HP (780 CFM best we could tell from numbers) and ran ok, but looking for even more, while maintaining driveablility. Thanks for input.

I agree with the cam, I was thinking that last night. The cam is better suited for a mild 440 instead of a Indy headed stroker. It'll have good manners though, be like a stock cam in a 500in motor.. Lol

I agree with the cam, I was thinking that last night. The cam is better suited for a mild 440 instead of a Indy headed stroker. It'll have good manners though, be like a stock cam in a 500in motor.. Lol

Next time I rebuild (hopefully not soon) maybe I will put big boy britches on and go bigger cam, was away from this stuff for a long time, had a mid-life crisis about 6 years ago and found a shiny black fast loud Mopar so I couldn't resist. Didn't even know these forums existed. Between this & Google, I am finally getting some of the knowledge I need. Dad was a lifelong Mopar mechanic (rest his soul) who hated high perfomance stuff, so learned what I could from friends. And that was back in the 70's and 80's !!! Thanks again guys.

duh............don't know.......all I know is they are the 440 EZ1 heads........ports are large, never measured them myself.

My build is much milder but I found an 850 and 750 worked very well on it. The 850 didn't require as much peddle but the 750 was much better for off idle performance. I'd error on the smaller side to avoid poor low rpm performance.

Sounds like your combo is a bit off. If it were mine I would switch to the Indy dual plane if it's a mw port. If it is standard port I would go with a smaller plenum single plane or an edelbrock rpm dual plane. The Indy single plane is a max performance piece and doesn't compliment that cam. Basically you have a low rpm cam with a big rpm intake.
