Can I get some help on changing the valve seals on a 318 poly motor.
Can these be changed withOUT removal of the heads?

I'm looking for some questions answered right now if anybody can help.
I see the rocker shaft lock plug . I'm thinking loosen the rocker arm adjusting screws and pull the rocker shaft out . (I have the radiator out)

Is this correct? And how does the rocker shaft lock plug come out?

Hey 11th,i know on most engines you can change them without taking the heads off,not sure why you took out the rad.On most engines you need a tool to replace the spark plug on the cylinder ,and you need to fill the cylinder with air.Hope you have a compressor .then you need a tool to compress the spring, please dont take it apart without air in the cylinder ,because you can drop the valve into the cylinder ,and you will have to remove the head, you should talk to a mechanic or buy a manual
Hope this helps

Thanks ,
I took the rad out to get a pin hole fixed. Thought that the extra room would also be nice. I do have a compressor and the tools to get air into the cyl and to compress the springs and a small magnet to pull the keepers and not drop them. I was told to bring the piston down before putting the air into the cyl.
The problem was the rocker shaft lock pin which I now have out. I DO NOT want to force things so once the lock pin is out should the rocker rod slide out? It seems to be moving but no more than when the lock pin was in.
What do I do?
I'm stuck.#$%^@@%&*%#@

Here is a video that will answer some of your questions...(On a chevy motor)

For any one with out a spark plug air adapter, here's a quick tip.

If you remove all the porcelain and electrode off of a spark plug and weld on a air line fitting in it's place it's a good cheep way to pump air into the cylinder.
Just weld both hex ends together to make the tool.It helps if you have a 90deg female fitting on your air line to connect them.I made mine years a go and it worked so well some one stole it lol.

No body who has posted so far has a clue about poly 318's the heads must be removed. the rocker shaft bolts are also some of the head bolts and the rocker shafts come out the back.

I have used a clean piece of vacum hose, fed it in with the piston down brought it up on the compression stroke which will hold the valves up. When your done pull out the couple feet of hose and move on to the next.

This project is getting worse by the minute. Why would the mopar guys design the rocker rod to go out the back! WTF
If anyone has any secrets on the 318 poly motor rocker rod removal please let me know. These heads are on the car and really DO NOT want to remove them.
I wanted to be driving this car this summer and now it's looking like next summer.
Remember the 318 poly is different so traditional methods will NOT work. Please only info on the 318 Poly.

Poly valve seals....

No body who has posted so far has a clue about poly 318's the heads must be removed.

You do not need to remove the heads ...or the rocker shaft....

It sounds like you have the proper tools and equipment already.

Air up the cylinder... Back off the rocker adjuster screw, remove the push rod and slide the rocker arm to the side and pivot it down on the pushrod end..... remove the valve spring assy using the proper tool....replace the seal being careful not to push the valve off it's seat, (you'll lose the air pressure and drop the valve into the cyl.)... reverse the procedure and go to the next.

The entire procedure should only take a couple of hours.... I,ve done this many times.

Glad you posted this. I was gonna hit the garage and pull a valve cover and look.

ANother method of holding the valves up-take the spark plug out, roll the motor just under tdc on that cylinder and feed in a lenght of poly rope until the cylinder is full(leaving the end out for removal) -hand turn the engine until tight- valves cannot fall in this way...

318 or 440....?

yank it and drop in a 440!

HUMmmmmmm..... Let see.... 318, 16-18 MPG with regular gas..... OR ......
440, 6-8 MPG.... 92 octain at $4.10 gal...... NO BRAINER... keep the 318...!!

Keepin the 318. The budget is low.
Once this is done and moving again I'll post some photo's. Thanks 2 all. I got it all set up and gonna start the seals in 20 minutes.
