I have a chance to go look at a charger. It is supposed to be a 440 4 spd car. I was just wondering what the letter should be in the vin for a 440. I dont know exactly what year just 68-70. I dont have much info except someone that works for me has a nephew who knows the owner. But i am going to find the car possbily even tomorrow. The car is reported to be rusty, running (but smoking), and in the 500-600 dollar price range. And yes if its anything like the description im going to buy it No questions asked. I was even told the title could be gotten with some effort. Any info would be appreciated. Wish me luck...

Ok i found the info. looks like possibles are L, M, U, and V. what are the chances of a non 6 pack car have a dana since its a manual shift car?

L (71 1/2 2-bbl 440) M 400ci U 440 , V 440(3 x2bbl) and Z(Special order V8) as I read it.

I used the tech page from a year one catalog. L was 440 in 68 and 69. M as special order those 2 years and 3x2 in 69. U as 375hp 440 in 70. I was in a hurry on V as its listed as 71-72. and Z is special order. It also has L listed as a 383 in 71 and M as a 400in 72-73. What source did you use? Just wondering since it didnt quite match the yearone catalog. and NO i dont take yearone as the gosple. Just wanting the best source for info.

I used the Mopar performance cat..Looks like I was in a hurry too- your correct
L=440 68-69
L = 383 in 71
M = 400 in 72

A Charger with an engine code of L will most likely be an R/T, as L designates 440 hi perf. The VIN should read as follows for 68 and 69. XS29L...... XP29 is a standard Charger that can have a 318 or any variety of non HP engines. A pretty common 68 - 69 Charger would read XP29F... That's a 318 car.
