The Viper engines were aluminum.

That engine was originally steel.
Lamborghini engineers revamped Dodge's cast Iron block V10 engine design for the Viper by redesigning the block and heads in aluminum alloy Prototype blocks were cast by Lamborghini, at the time a Chrysler division.

Of course the original 300 hp. V-10 trucks were iron block. But the SRT-10 trucks that came out in 2004 - 2006 used the Aluminum Viper engine, rated at 500 hp.

I think the 9 mpg. city rating was part of the reason for lower sales with about 10,000 made over the three years.

They were so much heavier than the performance cars,that they weren't impressive, and lots more expensive. Good recipe for poor sales!

Compared to cars, maybe not impressive. But in the truck world, they still came second in Motor Trends top 12 quickest pickups, with a 13.2 quarter mile and sub 5 second 0-60. (The more powerful and lighter supercharged Toyota Tundra edged it out, but it was a dealer installed option). They also hold the record for Guinness fastest top speed in a pickup truck at 154.587 mph.
