choke rod length

318 with carter 2bbl factory intake ,rod seems to be too long and chokes out on cold start. vac pull off working how do you determine the rod length? tks

The year will make a huge difference, manifold and carb. Any photos or numbers to post. You could have mix and matched parts. Carb base gasket thickness plays into it also.

all are mix n match, i guess ill just cut n shorten the rod so theres not so much tension to keep choke closed tks

Look at the underside of the choke unit some are adjustable. The choke plate needs to fully close when cold, the choke pull off opens it part way when engine starts.
Is your intake heat crossover open or plugged with carbon? This causes all kinds of cold start problems.

What 318 intake and carb do you have?

That sounds much easier than raising the carb to factory height.
