I've been seeing projectors at thrift stores lately.

I believe it is old style 35mm film.

It looks 35mm to me. I recall using the viewers in grade school during the 1970s. You view the first film frame while listening to the audio narrative, a tone sounds signaling for you to advance to the next frame. The viewers can still be found on epay, from time to time.
