Color choices; Original or Not?

That pale yellow always looked great to me; could be remembering my older bro's 1st car '65 GTO in that shade of yellow. It 'pops' (just my opin). My '70 Cuda vert (yellow/black) was too yellow for my taste. I changed the color of my '63 Fury from white to gray and glad I did. My brother talked me into selecting a diff color for it last minute at the body shop and have gotten many compliments on it I think mostly to do with the striking contrast with the red stripe. LOL, the book 50 Shades of Gray...I got color chips from the shop...in the area of 150 shades! Go figure, 1st one I picked, after going through ALL of them was the choice and a Chrysler color. Changed the white vert top to black with the new color. My choices were more limited with the red insides. Anyway, back on your question...if it was me, I'd keep the yellow drumming up a marketing pitch for your son. It will be a standout at the shows.

If your going to stray away from the original color then the chip chart is wide open and you do not have to stay brand specific on color.
Myself I like that pale yellow on a 60s car.
Its hard to get a good idea looking at chips, drive the dealer lots and get some ideas.

I like the pale yellow. Have a pale yellow and white combination on a 57 Coronet. I would keep the original color on the GTX (original color cars keep their value much better), but maybe add black stripes, which can be deleted in the future if desired....

Thanks a lot guys for all the in put! I have never owned a black car, but my wife had a dark teal car once, and you are so right, it always looked dirty! I didn't even think about showing scratches. I am sure that can be an issue. As mentioned, I like the yellow because I am a purist, and it's different, but I really want my son to be excited. I am leaning towards letting him go with a color he wants, as if he ever does loose interest I can always take it back original. I have made my mind up that the black is out because of many of the issues mentioned. You guys have given me a lot to think about. I will keep plugging at him and explaining the difference in value with original vs make it what you want, but will probably ultimately let him make the decision.

I think that letting your son pick the color combo would be a great way of insuring his interest in the hobby for years to come. And you definitely can't go wrong with black/red combo. Now you just need to add the Hemi and you'll be all set.

Yeah the Hemi would be great! I may let him pony up his money when he gets older if he wants to swap that out! I do plan to modernize the suspension and braking system to make is a better ride.

Comments:
1) Agree with all of the negatives stated above about black cars.
2) Too many black cars on the road already.
3) I've already seen too many black, blue, and red '67 GTXs over the years and many were beautiful. That being said, I would be tempted to go with a medium to dark blue with a dark blue interior...not too dark though. Blue is my favorite color and I would really consider it, but know my son would care less, and I know I don't want that. My favorite is B5 blue. I would love to one day have a B5 69 Roadrunner. I really like the blue on blue as well.
4) Your shade of yellow is great. Elegant and understated for a GTX. Sleeper. I like sleepers. I completely agree, and another reason I like it!
5) No red interiors! Too many of those around! Why so popular? Full disclosure: I have a '79 300...RED interior, I am scarred for life. I really feel that there is more to this story....hehe!
6) No stripes is the CORRECT choice. Again agree! Another sleeper factor. Just the scoops to tip you off.
7) BMW Imola red is a nice understated red...if you go with a red exterior.
8) If you go with an in-your-face LOOK AT ME color, then:
a) Porsche Continental Orange from the 1970s.
b) BMW Electric Red (aka: JAPANROT) from model year 2002). One of my brothers calls it "arrest me red". It's a beautiful red. It will garner a lot of attention.

If he goes red, I would like to try to keep it a Chrysler color and I had a 2001 Inferno Red PT Cruiser and I loved that color! Was bright red in the sun, kind of dark red in the shadows, and had a nice metallic flake to it. I have some of the touch up paint and bought him a model car for Christmas. I plan to let him paint it that red to see how it would look.

Good to have the kid involved on choices. But let’s face facts he is 9 years old, his life will change from where he is now. Hate to sound negative, but truth always hurts. Likely that kid will grow tired of the car and move on to some activity accepted but his peers.

I understand this for sure. I think though letting him choose the color will help, and who knows, I never lost interest in cars with my dad. I also think that it will be easier for me to change it back to the original yellow, if he does loose interest than to go yellow and let him try to change it later. I know how it was being broke in college, getting married and starting a family, there was no extra money to even think about working on a car!

Back in the 80's when I was shopping around I actually wanted a 71 Demon 340 or Duster in red or blue. The Charger turned out to be the most complete, best condition, low mileage car I could find, and never even heard of turbine bronze when I got it. 33 years later it's still one of my favorites.

Just this years 2020, not going back to the teens, you will find Blues,Reds,Orange,Yellow,Green , ect thats just Chrysler and 2020.
I paint every week and will agree with you in the past we had a glut of bland colors but things are getting better the last 5 years.

I agree there, but it is only Chrysler. Almost all the other major brands have just gone bland.

I dont need to see the color charts, i know there are nice colors available. Lexus has an Amazing candy apple red. But, the offramp to my house passes next to a Toyota dealer, and I can look into the lot as I go home.
I see.... three red suv's, two blue suv's,one red pickup, no green anything, no brown anything, and 500 or more black,white, and silver everything else.
A close friend has a envy green challenger. Anywhere he goes, it is the only green car in the lot.

I get that you’re a purist and want to stay with a Chrysler color. But I have to tell you when I had my 68 GTX restored a few years back - it was 68 maroon - I being somewhat of a purist myself had long ago decided when I restored and painted the car I was going off the books a bit. I saw a 2003 Lexus at the dealership with a Black garnet pearl color on a new release. I said to myself way back then that when I painted the GTX it was going to be that color. It was never popular on the Lexus but on my car - it is by far and away the most complemented aspect of the GTX hands down. Everywhere it goes people love that color. My point is make your son happy along with yourself and explore a little bit and don’t worry so much about the purity aspect. There’s a lot of beautiful colors out there. Pick one that makes you both happy.

I had this same dilemma when I bought my car. It was citron green and everyone hated it (apart from me). I was going to paint it black (among other colors). I put the below together to help me decide, but ended up sticking with the original color. Good luck with whatever you choose.
